Ahh there's so much stuff i would LOVE to say about this - but i'd probably be stoned to death aswell.

Wow that really doesn't read right to me. Your always saying let me have my opinion so I don't want to think about what your not willing to say now

Neither do i, which i why i am keeping shut on this one. It's such an emotive topic for me.

Ok, so Hitler wasn't stopped on moral grounds - but apartheid in South Africa was and the pressure put on the UK to free India was

Just heard on news she is being spared................instead they are hanging her. :O

this is soo odd ... from what I'm gathering from reading this .. the majority of you think we should leave other countries to just get on with it ...? i suppose we should let all those starving africans die also then ? and next time there is a natural disaster we can leave them to clean up there own bodies ?! and feed there own starving country... i know a bit off topic but I'm just making a point! you can't just butt out when it suits you... well apparently you can ... x

Now because of the intervention she is being hung, which is quicker than stoning. Not ideal but thats something I guess. So it did make a difference.

totally spot on, children in need, comic relief etc.. and i kno ive said it before but also the wars, which arnt our wars.. i wonder what the differences would be then, if we all gave up on them!

i agree, its not nice but its a step up from being stoned to death. if noone had intervened then she would stil be stoned..

Sadly there are many more that dont make the news that do go through it. This is only one.

Totally agree
xx

I suppose it's better she is being hung. Still not great but we were never going to be able to completely stop them

I am NOT saying that at all, and there is a difference between a natural disaster and a countries culture

I have said time and time again i do NOT condone what they are doing, never have, never would, all i am saying if you have to draw the line somewhere in when we do and don't step in, we can't solve every single world problem as much as we would like too.

Thats completely different, well imo. this is a way of life that has been created in this country through belief and culture. Starvation and natural disasters are not.

I'm leaving this alone now :) as its one of those things that just end up going around and around ... suppose we can just agree that NO-ONE thinks this is an acceptable way to kill someone... but we all have a different opinion on how involved countries should be in each over affairs.

plus I'm tired lol! :flower: x

I haven't read all the replies, but WOW...that picture in the article of the woman being buried before being 'stoned'...makes me ill. I don't know if I really want to know the answer, but I don't know, so I am going to ask...how does one get 'stoned' and who does it? I guess my gut reaction is that we all need to do something about this to make it stop. If we all act like it's not our problem, then this will continue. But, on the other hand, I do agree that countries should be careful where they get involved. Pick their battles. I do feel horrible for this woman though. Surely she must have known this would happen to her though, no??? I am not saying she deserves it, but if I knew I was going to get 'stoned' for cheating...I would not.

Wow That really is cruel. Imagine if Britain punished the way other countries do! Although I don't neccessarily agree in Britain being involved...we have enough of our own problems xx

it involves, as you,ve seen the women being buried to the shoulders/neck whilst a people throw stones at her until she eventually dies. as someone stated earlier they are also told not to pick big stones as they dont want them dead with the first hit. im not sure as to who actually does it, but i dont really think that matters...

OK, did some research, and found a couple interesting quotes:

Stoning is a grave and serious violation of International Human Rights Law. Stoning breeches the International Convention of Civil and Political Rights (1966), to which Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, and the Sudan are party signatories. Article 6 of the ICCPR states that “in countries which have not abolished the death penalty, sentence of death may be imposed only for the most serious crimes”, of which adultery is not one. Article 7 of the ICCPR states that "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." This last injunction is the content of a whole Convention: the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (1987), which is widely considered to have reached the level of customary law due to its strong international acceptance by more than fifty nations, including many Muslim nations.

and:

Shouldn’t we just accept stoning as part of someone’s culture and their right to freedom of belief?
There is no excuse for the killing of women in the name of any ‘religion’, ‘culture’ or ‘tradition’. ‘Religion’ and ‘culture’ cannot and must not be invoked as excuse for the killing of women, because religion and the laws which derive from it are always subjective interpretations. Culture is not static, but constantly re-created and re-defined by the various interests of groups in positions of power in a society at any given time. There is no excuse for the killing of women. Murder is a brutal violation of the most basic human right – the right to life – and any practice which harms women or impinges upon their agency and autonomy contradicts fundamental rights, such as the right to security; the right to freedom from violence; from inhuman, degrading treatment and punishment; from terror; the right to choose a marriage partner; and the right to not face discrimination under the law. As long as impunity exists, the misappropriation of culture and religion will continue to threaten women’s safety. No ‘culture’ has the right to kill and harm women based on their perceptions of morality or honour. The freedom of belief does not mean freedom to kill. Stoning is a brutal example of how culture and religion are being misused to perpetuate violence against women.

So, I am leaning towards it being a gloabl issue rather than a country's issue. I haven't heard of Canada being involved (my country) but I wouldn't be opposed to Canada being involved.

i read earlier than if they survive 15 - 30 mins then they are freed, i also read if they manage to get out of the hole they are freed, it said very very often men make it out of the hole before death but this is most likely because they are buried only to the waste where are women are buried to the chest :(

all very very sad
