Is anyone crafty with building things with wood?

My DH and I can figure out most of how to build this cage, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how they got the mesh on the door to sit in the wood so it's not exposed on this inside.

It almost seems like they cut a slit in the wood and slid the mesh in, but then again it also looks like they took two pieces of wood and sandwiched the mesh in there. But I just can't tell!!

Any ideas??

Thanks!!

Btw, this is a chinchilla cage. :)

I think it's usually done with the mesh sandwich between and nailed in place.

I know it's for a different animal but on this page there's a little diagram of a mesh vent and it looks as though they use brackets to hold it in place? https://octodondegus.weebly.com/how-to-build-a-degu-cage.html

I've googled different animal cages and it seems a lot with mesh are just stapled to the wood. I would do that or fix it between two pieces of wood. Can you go to a pet shop and look at some similar cages?
