I am really worried because at lunch today, my mother-in-law made a potato salad which I readily tucked into thinking that the mayo was shop bought. It later came out that she made it herself with raw, un-pasteurized eggs. I know that raw eggs should be avoided during pregnancy and am really worried now. Has anyone else had raw eggs and been fine? Should I be scared for my baby?

Try not to worry, the only reason they say that is because of bacteria but if it doesn't make you sick or anything then try not to stress.

I agree with PP. If you had homemade mayo every single day and u got sick from it then maybe I'd wonder. But if you slipped up once just try not to worry and stick to the store bought mayo and you should be fine.

It's always a risk whether you are pregnant or not but the risk is so tiny - it's just if you were ill it's more dangerous when pregnant. It was a one off - not like you are eating raw eggs all day - and in future maybe let her have alist of what you can;t eat so she doesn;t inadvertently give you anything else :) It will be fine.

Hey hun i agree with the others - i found out i was pg at 6-7 weeks with my daughter and i was a chef - i ate a ton of stuff i shouldnt have before i knew and i was fine! cheeses, pate, sushi you name it! im sure you will be fine, if the eggs were fresh the risk is so low. also, there was a time before all these rules and we all lived ;] xx

agreed - my mum had none of this and me and my siser both arrived healthy.

Thank you so much ladies - feel much calmer now! I feel fine so will stop worrying now - and have told hubby to have a word with his mum for me.

The risk with raw eggs is that they may possibly contain Salmonella.

In the UK, this is now seen so rarely, that its possible to say that 99% of eggs in this country do not carry a risk of Salmonella.

Even safer is if the eggs are marked with the lion stamp.

I am not saying its going to be ok for every pregnant to suddenly start eating them again, just that your risk of salmonella from raw eggs is really tiny.

I worked in Microbiology for 13 years, and we rarely saw a case of salmonella from eating raw eggs, if ever. Mainly its travellers returning from abroad or outbreaks in various packaging or from restaurants. These are invariably cases where hygiene is lacking or food prep regulations are not followed correctly. You are probably more at risk from reheated meat that is not reheated to the correct temperature or cross contamination from raw chickens.

Don't worry, stress is not good for you or the baby, if you get ill in the next 24-48 hours, see a doc immediately or go to cas, otherwise relax

Remember something important when stressing in early pregnancy: up until a few decades ago, we had no clue what was/wasn't dangerous, and we've managed to successfully overpopulate our planet anyways.

60 years ago, they were still telling pregnant women to smoke so they wouldn't gain too much weight! Everyone ate their eggs raw. Drinking was fine. And we have generations of people who are fine.

Should you do everything you can and follow orders when possible? Absolutely... but don't stress over it. We have millenia of experience to show that screw ups are not that bad. :)
