Hi my son is 10 months old, he had a tummy bug about a week ago that only lasted 24 hours but ever since he has been refusing solid foods.

He's usually a fantastic eater and would happily empty his plate (and then start eyeballing my plate) but now the only things he will entertain is plain dry bread or baby biscotti's.

It's the same thing at every meal time. I try to offer him foods that he is used to and that he enjoys, if I offer him finger foods he just throws them onto the floor, if I try to spoon feed him and he turns his head and swats the spoon away. In the end I almost always concede and pass him either bread or a biscotti, which he will eat but not much (perhaps a quarter of a slice of bread or one biscotti) then he starts screaming to be let out of his high chair. I hate giving him them as they have no nutritional value and I'm worried I may be fostering bad eating habits but I just want to get SOMETHING into him

His canine teeth are cutting through so I have been giving him paracetamol half an hour to an hour before feeds but this has made no difference.

He is breastfed and is still having all his usual feeds plus he is now having up to 12oz of formula milk per day now as all he wants is milk and my boobs don't seem to be able to keep up.

On top of his strange new eating habits he's been miserable, he just cries for most of the day no matter what I do, he doesn't want to play with his toys, or go in his walker, or crawl around the floor, he even cries while I have hold of him!

I just don't know what to do! HELP!

Have you tried putting purees on the bread? That might be a way to get him a little bit of nutrition in.

It's possible that his stomach still isn't 100% and so only bread is comfortable on his tummy.

Since he's teething- is the bread the hardest thing he has? What I think of as biscottis are quite hard and would be lovely to teeth on- and would also explain why his interest wanes. As he chews them, it gets soft and so isn't as nice anymore.

Could you offer frozen pops and things? You can make them out of home-made fruit concoctions that you know are healthy and nutritious and it might be nice on his gums.

I keep hearing the saying: "Food before one is just for fun." I'm a first time mom, so I'm still learning myself, but it seems like he may just need a break post-illness. Nutrition wise, I'm sure he'll be fine for awhile. Liquids, especially breast milk are great while sick since they ensure hydration. Sometimes the tummy just needs a break.

If a human being, and I mean adult, had to live off of breast milk exclusively, it could. Your kiddo won't starve nutritionally.

thanks for your replies, i'm definitely happy to hear that there is no danger of him starving himself as it really did have me worried. i love the idea of making frozen fruit treats think i'll give that one a go and see how he goes with that! i think you may be right too about his tummy just needing a break after having a tummy bug. i made him sausages and mashed potato today and he ate most of the two sausages i gave him but wouldn't even consider the mash potato, at least it was something more than just bread! lol

I'm not sure what the texture on the sausages was like- but that really makes me think that he wants something with more resistance. My baby is an awful teether, started showing signs at 2 months, and for finger foods pretty much just goes for biscuits and hard things that feel nice to teethe on. Hopefully the frozen fruit things will go over well if that is the case!

If he keeps favoring bread- you can look up recipes for teething biscuits that incorporate fruit and other things that make them healthier.
