12 wk old fretful feeding.

Update!!

Well after my phonecall diagnosis of 'colic' it seems our suspicions of that being crap were true, i had a diff doctor (this one has been dealing with my OH's chest issues and is the only one to say its not asthma but something is there) i explained all what was going on,then he read my notes, and the previous doctor had put 'phonecall diagnois colic, told to buy infacol' he went "this isnt colic...and you've got him on colic drops?"
i said "well yea hes always been a hard winder until now....this is just a whole different thing"
"its definately not colic, it seems like reflux to me, so what i shall do is prescribe some infant gaviscon, use half a sachet per daytime feed,if it still seems the same, use the whole thing, then i want to see you again in 10 days and we'll go from there" <---GOOD STUFF! so far he had 1 feed, with half a sachet, only took 2oz,im wondering if its too thick for the teat and proving hard for him to get at IFYKWIM? but heres hoping this helps. He did say 'i think you need something thicker for his stomach in which he can keep it down, then he wont be put off' so yea, im just glad i didn't have to go the argument stance! xxx

Aww fab! You may need variable flow teats hun for the thickness x

thank ya doll, think i may need a trip out today to get some! thats about 30 quid on teats in one week D'OH! lol xxx

oh this sounds just like my daughter, I'd never heard of silent reflux before, It comes and goes with her though. Sometimes she'll drink a whole bottle no problem, then other times she'll get herself in a right tizz, arching her back, straightening her legs out, really stiff, it's like she won't bend to let me wind her, I thought it was trapped wind so bought the infacol to help her bring it up which I think it does most of the time. Like you said it's like she does want to drink more but for some reason can't and fights with the bottle. Should I put her on something different to infacol? I tried gripe water too but I prefer infacol it seems to work better and it's less messy I find, LO seems to like it more too x

I had in fact been wondering if she was an early teether (her daddy teethed REALLY early.. he was actually born with a tooth! lol) as she has been drooling so much lately.. is it possible the dribble could irritate the back of her throat at night? last night she woke up crying and she's been making noises as if she had mucus/phlegm in her throat x

Ooohh MaybBaby I've just noticed something even more coincidental!... our babies were born on the same day according to our tickers! :haha:

Yeah sometimes teething can cause discomfort cus of the acid in the dribble

I thought dom was teething early too!!!!! how odd! - hes exactly like that, but now instead of straightening hes pulling in,hes getting VERY cranky and arsey, ive cried twice today as i just feel so so helpless! ive bumped the gaviscon to a full sachet now as half wasn't touching, he's puked twice today :( - are the sounds kinda like a tap dripping..like a 'PO-OOING'? because dom does that, its so freaky :( he keeps choking on what seems like nothing but i know its milk/dribble - i was on dentinox colic drops with no issue whatsoever (as he was a hard winder at the beginning) and now i have infacol,im not sure if its making a blind bit of difference but i just hope it helps him slightly if any  i hate giving infacol as dom just spits it out (which he doesnt do purposefully its just babies push the tongue out to suck don't they?) but dentinox you could add to a feed which i bloody loved  now im on a full sachet im waiting a few more days, theres no way im waiting ten its too long for him to suffer :( - and really?!?!? 17th feb?!?!? :D! :happydance:

Yeah 17th Feb! :) How sweet :) :cloud9:

I'm not sure about the noises do you mean crying noises or tummy noises? (or other?) sorry if I'm being a bit stupid in asking that! lol

Oh bless you :hugs: I've had days where I've cried over things like this so you're definitely not alone :hugs: Is infant gaviscon one of those things that takes a few days to work then? I don't blame you for not wanting to wait 10 days though, that is a long time. I wish I could suggest something but not sure myself atm :hugs: I'm taking Hollie to the doctors tomorrow though as I thought I would mention this and also I think she has a cold. So I'll let you know what the doctor says to me about silent reflux on here tomorrow :) I'm sure they'll probably say similar sort of stuff but you never know they might have some good tips for us hopefully x Hope you and LO are ok xxxx

its a tummy noise, like a tap dripping back into itself? LOL its a weird noise, but now i can hear the milk entering his stomach, splashing in,its horrid! - im not sure, but im hoping i have a lil breakthrough - Not serving his feed warm! he seems to take it cool ALOT better!!! thanks chick, maybe you'll get something new, diff docs, diff diagnoses! im wondering if his cooler feeds may be working, he still fights but was gladly taking them better, maybe you could try it too! it is tough :hugs: and even worse seeing his poo's become real hard, when i got to my moms i changed him only to find the poo had imprinted its shape onto his butt!...it was chucklesome at first but on second thought that much have been painful, the poor things :(-im now writing everything down so the doc can see whats gone on - i hope hollie is okay chick, and hope you're coping well, these poor birthday buddies haven't got it easy! :( xxxx

Ohhh I know exactly what you mean now, the sound of milk swishing in their tummy, Hollie used to get this more than she does now I think.

I took Hollie to the doctors who I think just wanted to get rid of me basically, I mentioned about silent reflux and he said he'd never heard of it, seemed pretty dismissive and wouldn't really give me a chance to explain what it was (I think as he was running about 30 mins late) but he did prescribe some infant gaviscon. The thing with Hollie is sometimes she gets this problem, sometimes she doesn't, I don't think I've noticed a pattern yet. So I don't really want to give her gaviscon unnecessarily you know? I've only given it to her a couple times, when she's gone all wriggly and grumpy, then I've given her a dose in the next bottle if that makes sense. Which did seem to help. Just wish I knew when/why it would happen?! How's Dom been? Also just wondering, how do you prepare your bottles? Hope you've both been getting on ok  xxx

ah my first doc wasnt like that but the second was- after 6 days i didn't notice an improvement so i took him back, the doctor didnt even let me take him out of the buggy!!! i told him 'look hes fussing on the bottle, hes crying, hes writhing around, hes grumpy, hes still bringing feeds up, hiccuping like a trooper and he's constipated-'
'Are you possetting him?'
'yes'
'are you giving him water?'
'YES and its hard to give it him'
'Adding sugar?'
'YES :growlmad:'
'are you clock feeding?'
'Not really as he doesnt even take 2oz when hes due a feed'
'Don't demand feed instead'
'I JUST SAID I WAS'
'yes... persevere i dont want to do anything atm just continue course of treatment and keep fighting with him then come back in a week'

I. WAS. FUMING.

but then?...he's been better! practically back to normal, he still struggles to take 3oz in one go so i do 2oz, wind, then try get the next 2oz down him about 15mins later which most times works ! i was just annoyed the doc was so dismissive too, im glad they did give you gaviscon to try though!, what im doing to make a feed is add formula and gaviscon into bottle, make up with hot water, mix, rapid cool, and whack it into the back of the fridge like a normal feed. I have a weird rotation thing in my head (OCD) lol so i know which bottle has gaviscon etc. But atm im doing 1 gavi, one normal, and keep doing that, but of a night no gaviscon what so ever. I didn't want to bang too much down him so he has around 3 doses a day but it has helped...or ive just gotten lucky and dom is better. Only yesterday we went to A&E as he CRIED and CRIED in pain for a solid hour and we we're stumped we found a rash on him and told it was urtacaria (skin allergy) so now dom is to stay cool at all times and stay away from sunlight D'OH!

Also...i know i shouldn't BUT! dom has shown a keen interest in food, ive started to try him on baby spoons of baby rice for breakfast (only the tip of a spoon and only around 5 of those) he's funny about the texture but gladly eats it and ive noticed he's been alot chirpier since! he's also been sick/possetting less since i started it, and he'll happily finish a 3oz feed after those lil nibbles too so all is well

SORRY FOR THE ESSAY! and im so so sorry for not replying! I didn't get an email saying it'd updated! :dohh: hehe Hows hollie bearing up? xxxxx :hugs:

hey I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to reply! I tried writing a reply twice but each time Hollie wouldn't let me finish! lol
How's Dom doing? I'm so glad to hear things were getting better! Also don't worry, your his mummy you know him better than anyone and it sounds like the baby rice is having a positive effect so well done for using your mummy instincts :)
Hollie's been a bit better I think :) she goes through phases, she seemed to get it a lot for a couple days but then not so bad lately, I think sometimes the problem could also be worsened because she's tired. She really gets the grumps if she's not slept enough, do you find this with Dom?
Hope you're both well :) xxx

Thought I would pop by on this thread with some tips for a fretful feeder.

Ruby my LO is terrible sometimes! I think i posted when this first went up and I have found a few things that have helped with us.

She can't drink her milk now when there is too much going on around her.. She prefers a quiet room, no tv!
She likes to sit in her bouncy chair or propped up on the sofa.. no knees!
Sometimes if she is having a refluxy hissy fit I have found that swaddling her completely calms her down enough to feed and she takes her full feed.
Also if she is wailing and won't feed I have read that holding a dummy in her mouth for a few minutes then quickly swapping it for the bottle works.. I tried this the other day and it worked a treat! :) I find it so stressful when she is hysterical and won't eat so hope these can help someone else too!

no worries! he seems good, infact much better,he's been bad with a cold so when i took him the doc (we have just changed to a really good surgery) i asked the new doc what she made of it all,she said 'yes deffo reflux' to which i asked if it would benefit him going to staydown formula and she replied 'no gaviscon in long term is no biggy (i always thought it contributed to stomach ulcers) and anyway i can give it you free' LOL she then gave us two boxes worth, when my current surgery only gave one box,so  there. I agree there dom has bad days and good days - dom gets distracted very easily, found this out friday when my friend had a 'mommy and baby' birthday meal as it was her bday, dom just couldnt settle no matter what i did and throughout the course of being out he took only 2oz in around 4n half hours. It was only till we got home that he downed a fair few 4oz bottles,so i see what you mean by tiredness it deffo could be flared by that. Has she gotten any better? dom still pukes but my it has dwindled since gaviscon arrived!!!!!! i hope shes much better and ok hun! bless the birthday buddies! haha xxx

Yes! dom is easily distracted! ive resorted to turning the tele off (i dont have anywhere thats quiet really i live on a very busy main road ) yea dom prefers his bouncy chair alot,im worried though because he's near enough growing out of it,hes a real tall baby lol! he cannot stand swaddling though, hasnt been able too since birth really,i dont get it lol! but thank you for the dummy tip im going to try that one! :D

dom also has only just started to up his amount to 4oz a feed, and thats only just! i sometimes manage to get at least one 5oz feed down him around 9pm and then its inbetween 2oz-4oz for night feeds and morning,he never seems hungry of a morning  ive cut his breakfast rice out for the time being,he's come down with a bout of the runs and i want to rule that one out, i doubt it is that as he caught his daddys cold monday and has been poorly since (and now im getting it!!!) and i think this is the cause, but as i said,i want to make sure as i started early that i havent caused an irritation the doc agrees with my thinking LOL infact im asked too many times if im a pharmacist or nurse/doctor myself by professionals as i seem 'too aware' or 'seem to have knowledge in that aspect'....i reply 'its common sense'

ALSO!!! i never had curtains in my living room, just had some put up and it has made a fab difference with distractions,so if you have cars and buses flying by your window and you have curtains :D! it helps me! I hope shes feeling much better sarah!!! xxxx
