My 14 month old hasn't really said any words yet. She hasn't even said mama yet. Shell ocassionally sounds like she says hi or mamama lol I'm getting worried. Should she not be saying something by now? When did your lo start learning words?

My LO didn't say her first word until she was 15 months and then had a huge word-spurt around 18 months. I would say that now her speech is actually advanced for her age.

The standard in my area is that they like to see kids say their first word by 16 months, but I think that's just very precautionary. I don't think they would refer them to anyone unless they weren't babbling either, it's just sort of a "we'll keep an eye on it" thing.

Totally normal. I think the average is 15 months for a first word but anything up to 2 years is within normal parameters. My DD was 18 months when she said her first word, by 24 months her vocabulary was too big to count and we'd also stopped counting how many words in a sentence because she was very conversational.

My son said his first word at 7 months. Now at 15 months he says 30+ words. But you know what? He still doesn't walk! He didn't crawl until his 1st bday! I think some babies develop very fast verbally, some physically and some emotionally. it's totally ok and normal!

My 15 month old babbles loads but has no words. He knows lots of words (will point to objects and follow instructions), but he doesn't say any!

I know that I read that around 13 mo, babies are still in a 'passive' stage for language. Def look for more signs that LO is learning/understanding language. My LO knows maybe 4 or 5 words to speak them: mom, dad, Ai yai yai, yeah. However, we have named some of her favourite toys and I will say "Can you pass me Christopher?" (her fav stuffy) and she will bring him to me so I can cuddle him. I say 'no' and she shakes her head. We try to do this with yeah or yes, but that of course hasn't caught on yet, haha. She will also feed me a cheerio or hand me the computer mouse when I ask for it; is always pointing and making sounds of interest.

What I've learned is that talking and having conversations with your baby, narrating everything, and reading are the three best things you can do to help your child learn. Good tips in general. But I wouldn't worry too much at this age.

My DS didn't say his first proper word until 21 months. I'd be crazily amazed at a 14 month old with any words lol, I wouldn't worry!

1-5 words is pretty common at this age, so obviously not a big deal yet.
