I had a visit from my Health Visitor 2 days ago and she told me that William shouldn't be drinking from a cup with a spout anymore as he's too old and he should be drinking from a regular cup/beaker. Has anyone else been told this? I was under the impression that 14 months was far too young to be trying to teach him to drink from a normal cup

I sometimes think she just finds things to get at me lol xxx

I think generally most that age don't. Ruby drank perfectly from a regular cup at that age, but she always had an open cup, from 6 months. They absolutely can learn at that age and younger, but I don't see any reason to hurry them!

That's strange of her to say that. Elliott will drink from a regular cup and is getting very good at it but he still hasn't perfected the technique and spills some.

I would say your LO drinking from a beaker is fine for quite a while yet.

Are you sure she didn't get confused and mean he shouldn't have a bottle?

Rivers only just started drinking from a normal cup in the last month or so.

Dont see any reason in rushing them if you dont think there ready

No was definitely a cup as she asked me if he drank juice, then asked what he drank it from. He will try and drink from a normal cup if you hold it for him but he doesn't have the patience yet to do it himself. Like with finger foods, he will just shove whole biscuits and things in his mouth and if you cut things up for him he will shove one piece after another into his mouth lol. I just prefer to leave him and do things at his own pace, as long as he's happy but she makes me feel like he should be doing all of these things hes not yet. xxx

He's still only young so I wouldn't worry too much about thinking you have to make him use a normal cup.

Els is good with his open cup but the temptation to play with the water/put things in it etc still seems too much at times :D

You'll know when he's ready.

Gabriel has only just started to show interest in drinking from a regular cup at nearly 16 months. He has a sippy cup with a straw that he uses for his water and we still (happily) give him all his milk in a bottle.
I don't feel the least bit of need to rush him into anything, he always gets there when he's ready.
Since he is starting to show interest in regular cups now, I let him drink water from mine from time to time to help him start to get the hang of it.
Eventually he won't want his sippy or bottle and that's when I'll put them away.

William is the same, he still has his milk first thing in the morning and last thing at night and it's still in a bottle as he won't drink it in anything else, he knows the milk is supposed to be in a bottle lol. You're right though, i think it's better to wait till he's ready before making the change. I just needed to hear it from you ladies who are in the same boat :-) Thank you xxx

Ihsan drinks from the toddler cup which has a straw in it. He likes regular cups and can drink from them just fine but sometimes he likes to pour what he doesn't want around the room so I'm in no hurry to take away the toddler cup! They are still only young and its perfectly fine imo x

Oh its total rubbish, my yougest LO can drink from a cup without a lid if she needs to but 99% she uses a beaker or drinks from a water bottle.....my eldest daughter is 6 and never drinks from a cup without a lid she always has a water bottle/sports drink/flask thingys.......with children an open cup just isnt practical, i think the main thing is that they can drink from one confindently if needed by at least pre-school age(3).........i honestly wouldnt worry about it! x

morgan cant really drink from an open cup she has tried but still spills quite a lot and she is almost 2

LO has been drinking from a normal cup since about 12 months but I kept getting realy paranoid that he would choke if he tipped it back to suddenly so we compramised with a straw.
He just couldnt get the hang of a spout type cup for some reason, he wouldnt tip it up but was fine with tipping his bottle and a cup with no lid, maybe it was because he couldnt see the water with a sippy cup.
Id maybe try a normal cup every now and then just to practice with but wouldnt suddenly throw out the sippy cup because 14 months is still a bit young to suddenly expect them to grow out of it

That seems silly to me, a child would have to be much older before I expected them to use only an open cup.

William can use an adult cup and he his his own Doidy cups that he has been using since he was weaned. However he can't resist the fun of pouring them out or putting his hands in, so for that reason he used lidded cups at lunch time, snack time and when we are out (at breakfast time and tea time we are going to change his clothes anyway so it matters less if he makes a mess).

If it is something you are worried about Doidy cups are a great way to help a child learn to use an open cup.

Evie will drink from a doidy cup but won't do it independently. I hold it for her and we tip it together.

She happily drinks from her straw cup so I'm letting her continue

Evie's 19 months and still drinks from a spouted beaker. It took us a long time to get to that phase lol, so if she wants to drink out of one till she's 2 then so be it! She does show interest in drinking from a cup with no lid, so we let her but she's still very messy with it!

For the sake of my sanity and my carpet, my 2 yr old daughter drinks out of a sippy cup. She can drink out of a normal cup too, and we bought a pack of bending straws for the dinner table (she tends to tip the cup to fast and ends up wearing most of her milk). I don't think it's relevant whether or not William drinks out of an open cup, especially when he's only 14 months.

Oh how I wish my daughter would drink out of some kind of lidded cup/cup with a straw!
She is 18 months old and from day 1 of drinking juice she would only drink out of a proper cup.
At the time I thought it was great but now I can't leave this cup around for her to drink from as and when she wants to because she either tries to drown herself with the contents or tips them out and proceeds to "hand paddle" in the puddle.

I have cups with lids and various straws and she just looks at me like I'm mad to even think she could drink out of it!!!

Ignore the HV, they are talking rubbish!!!

It's so good to have threads like these - it feels I am normal with all the things I worry about after all!! :-)
My LO used a non valve sippy cup for water but still spills loads down her front. I've recently been introducing her to a doidy which she can do but if thirsty seems to spill loads.
I really want to get rid of her bottles (she still has her morning and eve milk in one) but I don't know what to use. In the am she only wants her milk in the bottle.
Have any of you tried sippy and straw cups? What do you think is best? I might get a straw cup if it might be an option for the milk?

Did she mean at mealtimes or anything? Aisling has drunk from an open cup at mealtimes since 6 months old, with us helping her obviously so she's been confident with that for a long time. I think she'd be ok with an open cup the rest of the time too but to stop spills she has a lidded cup without a spout, one of the Tommee Tippee ones. It might be worthwhile giving an open cup at mealtimes to get used to it and do as you are the rest of the time :hugs:

I think that's nonsense. Helen still has her water in a spouted cup. She is interested in drinking from an open cup and practices in the bath but she tends to tip too quickly and tip water down her chin. There is usually one of her sippy cups lying around at all times so she can drink water whenever she wants. I think it will be a good while before we can leave glasses of water lying around for her.
