So I've got my 16 week MW apt in a couple weeks, hurrah my OH will be there. Will she try and listen to the baby's heatbeat? If so will she do it in a way we will all hear or will it be summit only she can hear?? I think the apt is going to be done at my house if that affects the equipment used?

Also how long is the apt and what else is done? Thanks x

hey

I just had my one a few days ago. It was in a medical centre though so not sure if that makes a difference. We got to listen to baby's heartbeat:happydance: and both me and OH could here it. They just use a handheld doppler so I am sure they can do it at home. I have heard some MW don't like to look for it as baby is still quite small just now and they might not be able to find it if baby is in a strange position, so I think that just depends on MW
MW checked my blood pressure again and checked for any protein/glucose in urine. Asked how I was and thats it!

I hope you appointment goes well:flower:

xxx

i got mine on weds at drs surgery, and i know she is going to do my bloods,nice

when i had mine it was at my doctors surgery and she did listen to the heartbeat with a doppler that i could also hear, she also did my blood pressure and urine sample.

not all midwives will listen to the heartbeat though, ive seen posts from women on here who havent got to hear the heartbeat at 16 weeks. hope you get to have a good listen to your baby! x

I don't remember what else is done at the 16 week appointment, but I know she will:

* check your blood pressure
* check your urine
* ask how everything is going
* ask about your scan (she's probably already seen the written evaluation, so if she asks it's just to get an idea of how you felt about it)
* update you on your blood results from your booking in appointment, and perhaps confirm your chances of the baby having downs, based on the bloods and nuchal translucency you will have had checked at the scan.

As for the heartbeat, she should check it. She will use a doppler, and you will both be able to hear it as well as her. It's a small piece of equipment, see here: https://www.aurorabioscience.com.au/images/summit_doppler_no_display.JPG so even if she does a home visit, she would most probably have it with her. The holes on the front of the handheld box portion of the device is where the speaker is, and it will emit the sound of the heartbeat to the entire room. She may not tell you the baby's heartrate though, so you should ask if you want to know.

Good luck honey; hearing the HB is a wonderful experience.

if she listens she'll let u too xx
