When they re-weighed C at 6 days old (they were a day late) he had lost 10% of his birthweight and he was jaundiced. We were re-admitted to hospital and under a strict feeding schedule. I started pumping because he was just too sleepy to take the breast and I was told he had to have 55mls every 3 hours to maked sure he started to put weight on. I could only pump 40-50ml and he only ever took 35-45 at the most (over a period of an hour with me practically force feeding him otherwise we would never escape - it was bloody awful).
So anyway long story short - it depends on the weight of your baby as to how much they should be getting. Is she gaining weight and having plenty of wet/dirty nappies?
Oh and C was 3 weeks early and 6lb 9oz - a smaller baby would need slightly less.
Our lo was just over 3wks early weighing 6lb 14 but also a little jaundice. With him being both early and jandice he was a very sleepy baby and whilst he would latch on would only have a few sucks before stopping!
He is due to be weighed tomorrow and i'm hoping he has started to gain weight as up until his last weigh in he has only lost weight (although still within 10% of his birth weight). He is now more awake and on the breast for 20-30minutes per feed but we are also giving EBM top up of which he will take up to 60mls!!! This makes me really unsure as to what he is getting from the breast.. i have great supply so really think he can get enough from breast if he will put the effort in! Now i think he is reliant on the bottle though as i can't get him to settle without the top ups but the most important thing at this stage is that he is putting on weight!
I think if jess is taking 30/40mls every 3hours then this is a really good start for her weight (just under 5lbs?). The only sure way to tell though is through her weight which hopefully is going up by now. If her weight is going up and she is settling fine then i would assume she is getting enough.
