I have very little in the way of routine. Feeds are on demand but tend to be every 4 hours at night and 3 during the day. Sleep is completely random and I am sure there are times when LO crys with being tired rather than hungry or anything else what should I be aiming for in the way of routine?

Read Secrets of the Baby Whisperer - great book.

I didn't follow it step by step, but it helped as a guide.

Most people I have asked re a routine have said its probably too early to start a proper routine and it's best to be flexible.

We try and loosely follow the EASY routine QTpie mentioned. So basically we try eat, activity and sleep on a three hourly basis. We used to feed on demand but as Ava-Mae has mild reflux, she kept acting hungry so we wasn't sure if she actually was hungry or if it was reflux, which is why we like the three hourly shcedule. I might help your LO with the over tiredness.

With Callum we didn't have a day routine til he was about 4 months old.

From 7 weeks we followed a bedtime routine, we gave him a bath at 8, then bottle then in bed, for the first few days it took ages to get him down to sleep but after a while he started to understand that bath/bottle meant it was time for bed and he then started going to sleep much quicker. As far as the daytime went, Callum usually fed every 3 hours, i'd do his nappy before a feed (or obviously any time he'd poo) and he would usually go about 45 minutes to an hour before needing to go down for a nap. Signs of tiredness for Callum was eye rubbing, yawning and pulling on his ears. Any other time that he wasn't feeding/being changed or napping would be the time that we'd have a play/talk/cuddle etc. Hope thats helped xx

I would really recommend a book called SOS - save our Sleep for routines as well as the Baby Whisperer. I found it gave me a good base to go from and gives routines from new born on. My twins are 7 weeks and if I can follow one of the routines anyone can!

We had no routine - Madeline fed when she was hungry (every 3-4 hours - which is what you say your LO is doing and that's just perfect for a 6 week old), slept when she was tired and was awake when she wanted to be.
The only "routine" I had was to try and feed her at 8/9pm and then again at 11/midnight, so that she would only be up once during the night.
Even though we were baby-led, by 10 weeks Madeline had got into her own routine of feeding, napping and sleeping through the night. Her routine is even better now, and it's all been formed from what she needed in those early days.
Now she will usually wake between 7am/8am, have a bottle then breakfast, nap between 10/11 for 45mins, have lunch and play, have a snack at 2.30 then go for a nap until about 4.30/5pm, then it's tea, play, bath, bottle and bed for 7.30ish.
At 6 weeks I wouldn't fret about routine x
