Is it ok to do this?

I boiled the kettle and put the correct amount of boiled water into a sterilized bottle and added the powder straight away and then quick-cooled the bottle in a bowl of cold water....

its was really quick and easy- and i knew the bugs in the powder had been zapped by the boiled water...plus it seems quicker to cool water down than it does heat it up..??!

iv been investigating it and apparently the only problem with this is that it can cause 'clogging' in the teat...but im using sma gold and it was fine?!

anyone else do/done their bottle this way...?

I think they advise not to do it in case of scalding but we are grown-ups so we should be ok!

I add boiling water to 1/2 of cooled boiled water and add powder and that works well for us.

I don't use powder, but if I did, I'd do it this way. Like History girls says, it's only not recommended so we don't burn ourselves!

I do it and I only get burnt because the Dr Browns bottles leak everywhere but I'd rather have that and knowing any bugs in the powder had been killed than LO getting ill.

thats the only way ive read how to do it  iv not burnt myself yet **touch wood**

its rather than waiting for the boiled water to cool for 20-30 mins as instructed on the tin...

i just wondered whether it affects the milk itself...as in, the boiling hot water affects the nutrients in the formula....

seems that its not good to add powder to cool water, boiling hot water, or nothing under 70 degrees?? So to get lukewarm water above 70 degrees seems very precise to me!

I think the reason they say to wait 30 mins is so your not scorching the milk powder and ruining it.

how does this 'ruin' the milk? Im just curious as i dont want to ruin the milks nutrients (if thats what boiling water does to the powder)

its so confusing as then using my method iv killed all the bugs, but then damaging the milk?!

I've read that you should NEVER do this as it burns the milk powder

I dont have a clue about burning the powder but I wait at least 20mins before adding powder to boiled water because it burns the hands off me before then  think also its something to do with having the plastic(bottle) so hot even if bpa free or something along those lines

i ve always done it this way. callum is gaining weight and is healthy so dont think it is doing any harm.

hmm well to avoid burning the powder (this must what the 'clogging' is all about, if powder burns it must 'clog' or go lumpy?) il maybe put the boiling water in like iv been doing...then chuck the bottle in the bowl of cool water for a couple mins so its not boiling and then chuck in the powder.....

so no scorching the powder but using the same method...

WIN!

^^^ thats what I did, til I started using SMA Staydown, and they advise to add the powder to refridgerated water! Mental - but Staydown has starch or something and even adding it to slightly warm water will clog it up. So it makes me wonder about the 'guidelines'!

thats how i used to do, but then it soon didnt work. Esp if your out and about i found it hard to do, either heating up or cooling down takes the same amount of time and i always have to do one or the other, i do it differently each day tho haha, once you get used to it you can judge when they want fed and heat up or coll down water in the right time. if that makes sense..

i boil the water leave to cool 30 min then add powder once i pour it into bottle and stand in cold water. i make sure this is done within the 30 to 45 min before hes due a feed

I also read it was because the BPA in plastic bottles that are not BPA-free leaches more easily into the milk when the water is too hot. I use BPA-free bottles and used to make feeds with freshly boiled water but then Adam got too impatient for 240ml to cool down so I started keeping cold boiled water in 120ml measures in the fridge, mixing the powder with 120ml boiling water and a small amount of the cold to cool slightly, and then adding the rest of the cold water. so the bottle would be the perfect temp right away.

this is what we do and have had no issues at all!

I've never known of the water being too hot causing the teat to clog - the powder seems to mix better when the water is hotter IMO. The extra steam does seem to clog up the scoop though.

If I'm making a bottle in a hurry, I use freshly boiled water - I'd much rather do that than make it up cold.
