Am I the only one who doesn't like names that are momentarily fashionable??!!!

Before I knew I was having a boy, I was considering names of all sorts, however not any that are what I deem to be 'fashionable'. I do like more traditional names for boys, and some girls names are a bit what my mum would describe as 'chav names'!

I have been called a child abuser by younger friends for considering more traditional and biblical names!! I just couldn't hack having a girl called Paris or Chardonnay, or a boy called Oakley or Brooklyn!!!

Surely I cannot be the only female alive who doesn't want to burden my child with a name that will sound ridiculous and they will get the mickey taken out of them?!

I prefer more traditional names also, however we do not know the sex, and as traditional as I am with names we are thinking for a boy Paxton Gram Forrest - or Finn Alexander Forrest, I do not know where I got the Paxton, it came out of no where, so these first names are not traditional, for a girl I am having a hard time because I can not find one I love as much as my other four- Jacob Charles, Ryan William, Ella Claire, and Olivia Gracexx

yehh i prefur the traditional names... i hate chav names they sound ridiculous lol.
i dont kno the sex of my baby yet but if its a girl i have choosen either Chloe Waters (fathers second name) or Olivia Waters.. and a boy we have decided Theo :)
xx

I totally agree - i have a little girl called Grace which, although is popular now, I didn't know of any others when she was born and I'd always loved the name. I love traditional names and couldn't stand to choose a name after a footballer/football ground (I know of a boy called Carragher Anfield - Liverpool FC supporting parents obviously!), a drink, a popstar etc etc.

I like lots of traditional names - I'm really hooked on Beatrice and Dorothy at the moment. I also like lots of more obscure name like Luna and Gaia. I would never, however, consider anything like Porsche, Chardonnay, Nike (I went to school with one!), Romeo, etc etc. They just sound ridiculous and, without sounding stuck up, I've never met somebody with a name like that who isn't a complete chav!

Yeah i prefer names that arent just in fashion for a few years .... im having a wee girl and we have chosen Hannah :)

I am not a fan of contemporary names either, however, traditional names are making a huge comeback.

We only like traditional names as well. I've never heard of anyone saying something bad about wanting a traditional name though. That's pretty tacky.

I think it's personal choice really  I've gone for Daisy.. I wouldn't even know where that fits into the traditional/fashionable names

I agree with you. I think those super unusual names just sound weird. I mean some of these names! Suri? Banjo? Apple? Really?

I'm with you for sure.

I don't like anything too unusual.

We are having a boy and like Ethan, Noah or Isaac. And for a girl we love Isabella and Sofia.

xx

Each to there own, I prefer modern names really, they seem to be the cooler kids lol :D

We are leaning towards traditional but do have a couple of un-common rather than unusual ones at the back of our minds.
I want Alice for a girl (after my Gran and because all the Alice's I know of are a little mad and I think that's what little girls should be!). My fiancé would like to include Bo and have either Alice-Bo or Bo-Alice.
We both like William & Harry if we have a boy but I did like Robson as my fiancé is called Rob and he would be Robs' son.
Although I have to be honest and say that we watched Heroes at the weekend and both like Sylar.
Every name we think of we do try to think of any possible nasty nick-names and then get them off the list.

I prefer traditional or old fashioned ones too. I'm a teacher and never fail to be amazed by the array of names around. Names which have spellings which do not look anything like the name are my own pet hate. For example, 'His name is John, and you spell it Joahnnn'.

People do make assumptions about others based on their names. It is something you give your child forever and I think you should put a lot of thought into it. Some names do seem to be veru much of a time and I wonder if they will be common in 10 years or so?

I like traditional names and more modern names but I do dislike names that sound like a made up noise (and I'm not telling which names they are because the second I do someone will appear saying "I named my baby that!" and I will have upset them, which I don't want to do because really, each to their own.) I think you can get a bit more adventurous with a girls name than a boy's name.

I love these lists, the names that teachers hate to see on their class register. I don't take them seriously but they do make me smile. Most of the names mentioned here are not too weird for me but since it mentions Chardonnay and so did the OP so I thought you might like to see it.

I don't see what your friends are talking about by saying it's almost child abuse to call your baby a traditional name. We chose Joseph because I wanted to honour my grandad, he was important to my life and had characteristics and values that I want my son to have. I think that's a better reason for us than calling him (I'm going to risk it) I-pod because I think it's a cool name nobody else will have or Smirnoff because we like drinking it (I don't but you see what I mean?) apologies to all the mothers of I-pods and Smirnoff's I just insulted by the way, I picked something that I think is unlikely to be used as a name anyway just to make the point.

When I was pregnant one of the mum and baby magazines had a free name book with it Cool Names for Babies or something. There was a whole section devoted to the coolest names not being the most unusual because they smacked of trying to hard and we all know that's not cool.

That article I linked, I think that's the one that says the naughtiest kids are also the most popular but from my own school days and now seeing my 14 year old neice going through high school (and she is both naughty and popular) I think the coolest kids were the ones who were happy and confident in themselves without resorting to spelling their name with three X's and a Z (even though they were really called Anne -again, sorry Anne's who are reading this) or to being disruptive and naughty.

Each to there own, I prefer modern names really, they seem to be the cooler kids lol :D

I'll have a high achiever over a cool kid any day! Lol. Or maybe they can be both..... Maybe all the 'cool' names and the traditional names on B and B should meet up in 20 years to compare notes! Or maybe not.

As a teacher I do glance down my class list to see what wacky names I may encounter. From my experience modern name does not necessarily equal cool kid!!

We will be going for more traditional names.

My name is Charlotte and my DH's name is Alex...so we have pretty common names!! We like the traditional names, but ones that aren't common so to speak.... We've settled on Evelyn for our daughter - it's old fashioned but I haven't met an Evelyn yet!! :)

xx

I'm Victoria and hated it growing up, but now I'm expecting, I'm leaning very much towards more traditional names; my fave at the moment being Ava Victoria. Naming a child feels like such a huge responsibility, it seems cruel, and, dare I say it, unnecessary, to name a baby according to your favourite car/designer/drink etc etc
