Am I the only one who doesn't like names that are momentarily fashionable??!!!

I much prefer traditional names as well. That being said, I think a name can be traditional yet cool and unexpected at the same time. For example, our top names right now are Dashiell for a boy and Ezri for a girl (Ezri is the feminine form of Ezra). Both are traditional (at least in my mind, lol) but cool. As an English teacher, one of my biggest name pet peeves is names that are spelled "wrong" or different than the traditional spelling. DD's name is Alexandra Lauren, and I've seen both her names spelled in "unique" ways. Alixzandra and Lauryn come to mind....*shudder*

i definatley dont think stupid names equal a cool kid :D from my experience the kids i no who have chav names like, destiny etc all come from mouthy, brainless familys lol xx

im with you hun... think of all the middle aged women in 50 years called Mackenzie!!! i like uncommon but not weird names, like poppy our chosen name!

Actually, the traditional names are what is trendy now! lol.... So if you dont' want to be trendy...you should go unique. If you look at any top baby list right now you will see almost all old fashioned names. Edward, Jack, Charlie, Maeve, Beatrice, Olivia, etc. etc.

It's funny how it all goes around. Soon the traditional names will be exhausted again...and people will get quirky again...

Poppy has got to be a UK name thing. It would very much be weird here in America :D

I don't like pretentious names but I also don't like traditional names. I like something a little unusual but not silly. In saying that, others may think the names I like are silly. I think naming a child is such a personal thing.

I like traditional names, but also like unusual names. I am finding it quite hard to find a balance between unusual and 'chav' or tacky. I do really cringe at some of my younger friend's children's names.

Mind you, my middle son is called 'Luca' which is the italian form of Luke, and although it is common in Italy, I have never heard a child here called it. However, someone recently called it 'chav'... Poor boy...

I think it is lovely and not chav at all. I do like names from other countries and cultures and Luca has a solid meaning and history so I think you can safely tell them they don't know what they are talking about.

I generally like traditional names: Nathaniel, Katie, i also like Ruby and Darcie, not sure what they'd be classes as though!!!

I wasnt saying I am going to name my child something 'stupid', I said modern...

Top of our list at the moment are Max and Bailey

I was only giving my opinion from personal experience... And naming a child definatly doesn't influence their intelligence levels... so why would they not be a high achiever?

xx

That's an interesting point you've made and I think perhaps it says a lot for traditional names that they can go through something like this.

They can stay popular but not be trendy and they can be both popular and trendy but they never truly go out of style.

i work for a nursery franchise and theres a certain name that appears at least twice in every nursery, id say the name but i dont want to offend lol!

I've seen the word "chav" used a millon times in this thread, what does it mean?
I'm from Canada and I've never heard it before

Chav - is a common term for someone who annoys the living daylights out of everyone! They're loud, obnoxious and wear overly fashionable clothes that are obviously knock-offs in an attempts to be 'with it'. They get in your way then when you ask them to move they try to get you to fight them! They invariable hunt in packs because the lone chav is a coward. They don't work, just claim every single benefit going and spend it all on fags, drugs, mcDonalds and market brand perfume that, if used, has the capacity to fill the entirity of a bus full of people within 30 seconds and, if you're lucky enough not to get sick fro the fumes, you'll bear the fruits of for the rest of the day. They hang around on street corners drinking the cheapest alcoholic beverage sold by the closest shop to the vicinity, and generally make life for ordinary citizens miserable. Beware the Chav pandemic that has hit the UK....it may be on Canadian shores before too long! (Sorry.....I'll put the soap box away now lol)

On topic now....we like unusual, traditional and meaningful names. If Earl Francis had been a boy he would have been Daphne Rose. My problem is that I don't like the thought of using that name if our next one is a girl, so back to the drawing board for number 2....we've got some ideas but as with Earl, I'm not sharing lol. Always loved the 'qualities' names like Prudence or Chastity, but I think Emmerdale has put pay to that! lol

I can't stand 'fashion' names. Trying too hard to make a name unique just makes it difficult for people to spell correctly, and as I've said before, can you imagine your solicitor being called 'Starlight' or 'Vassell' (went to uni with one of each of these!). I don't think a name will necessarily impact on their personal acheivement, but it may give people a fasle impression of them and therefore hinder any progress they are capable of making. I like to think that in any profession an 'Earl' will be treated with respect.

It also means those little bits of waste paper you get when you use a hole punch to make holes in a document so you can clip it in a binder.

No idea why it has too such random meanings though.
