I would just like to introduce myself to you all....

I was on another forum for quite a while but it closed down and so now I am here!

My name is Sammy and I have been together with my OH (Allan) for 2.5 years. I have an 11 year old daughter from a previous relationship.

We have been actively trying to conceive for about 1.5 years although I was off the pill a little sooner!

After a year of trying together for a baby I knew something was wrong. I had conceived my first child from a past relationship within a month or two and I knew I was ovulating. Finally OH agreed to go for some tests and we paid privately in Spain, where we lived, to have the necessary tests done. I was scanned and had blood tests and all the necessary and all was fine. Allan was not so lucky. His :spermy: analysis came back and it showed he had 4 million sperm/ml. A normal level would be 20 mil plus. This caused a great strain on our relationship and we stopped any further action :hissy:

Well, we then moved from Spain to Holland (he's Dutch) last December, both got sorted with decent jobs and decided to continue. Thankfully here in Holland you have IVF/ICSI covered with the medical insurance you have to take out. We have 3 free attempts. We have had to go through all the tests again and more. Its been an emotional rollercoaster believe me! His first SA test was 5 million/ml, not good, the motility and morphology were terrible. Most were not swimming, the rest were swimming sideways and they were not strong enough to make the "journey". His second :spermy: test was worse, they said the count was 1 million/ml and his swimmers totally immobile. We were told he was infertile and that this was worse case scenario, that the :spermy: could not get out of the testes and that in order to be able to even carry out ICSI (IVF was not even an option!) they would have to do a procedure called "drilling" which mean they have to drill the testes to take out the sperm by operation. We would have to go to Belgium for this to be done and may have to pay for this part to be done as well at €2,000. This all depended on SA test number 3, if the results improved we could start normal ICSI. Well, we were lucky as the final test came back as 39 million/ml and the motility was 16% :happydance::happydance:

Finally, last Tuesday 14th July we went to the hospital to go through the plan. I am now about to start ICSI in the next week or so!!!!! :happydance: It seems like forever we have been waiting. I am going to follow the "short" protocol plan. I am due AF on 26th July. I have to take my medication on CD1 and start an additional medication on CD3. This will continue for 10 days and then I go back to the hospital for my ultrasound to see if we can proceed to Stage 2. I am going to start a diary on CD1 and I hope you will all help me along a very stressful journey of worry and pain but hopefully a :baby: at the end of it all!

Anyway it will be nice to meet you all and if anyone thinking of going through this procedure and they want any help or advice then i'll be happy to help (if i can!) :hugs:

Hi Sammy!!

Welcome to BNB - it's a great forum and everyone on here is really supportive. It's really comforting to know others are going through the same thing.

DH and I hope to start ICSI in about 3 weeks.............he has sperm antibodies - so that causes them not to swim. So ICSI is our only hope - although we did conceive naturally last year - but ended in m/c at 9.5 weeks. Male fertility issues can put a real strain on a relationship so I know where you are coming from - :hugs:. Glad to hear you and DH are on the path forward to getting your :baby:

Anyways - look forward to supporting your journey for a :baby:

Oh - and Holland is such a beautiful place!!!! you lucky thing to live there.

Hiya
Good luck with your ICSI! :dust:

Hi and thanks for you kind words... yeah i never thought we would be in this position but I have made my peace with the fact that things dont always work out how you would like them to! :nope: We should be starting around the same time. Im anxious and scared in a way.... We have to make a lot of big decisions in the next few weeks. How many embryos would you like put back in? OH isnt that keen on 2 being put back in but we have spoken and I think that this is best. We know the odds on twins, im not bothered about having twins, its ok by me, OH would prefer one but be happy with twins (like he has no choice if it is!) The doctor is scaring me with the complications and said i have to realise that i might lose one later on in the pregnancy, that there is a small chance of really serious complications also but i dont know what there are? I was too scared to ask in case OH started panicking. At 37, and 38 in December I think putting 2 back is the right decision to give us the best chance. :hugs:

:hi: Hi Sammy!

Wishing you lots of luck with your ICSI. Great news on SA number 3. Sounds like things are starting to go your way now. I hope it continues for you.

Hello and welcome, thankyou for sharing your story so far with us. Really glad SA 3 was improved for you both.

Holand is such a lovely place, I am just over the boarder in Germany!

Awww.....Sammy I know exactly how you feel - I never thought we would be here either (especially as my DH has a child from his previous marriage!!!). But at least we have the technology to do this - 20 years ago it would not have been possible/affordable, so that is positive.

Once you make 'peace' with it - I think it is a really positive way forward.

I think if you can put 2 embies in - that increases your chances. I am 32 and in Australia, if you are under 35, they can only 'legally' put 1 back at a time.

I wouldn't stress to much about potential complications - things can happen no matter what - so you just need to keep up the PMA and believe it will all work out.
:hugs:

Hi and thanks for you reply... thats a shame they can only put one back in, really if anyone has gone through all that they should be able to choose how many they want putting back in whether it be one or 21 (lol) I cannot understand why they restrict it! Its true there can be complications in a normally conceived pregnancy... there is a risk with everything in life, even crossing the road! :hugs:

Welcome and good luck! :hi:

Thanks very much :hugs:

Thank you to everyone who has welcomed me, you all seem a really nice group of people. It seems weird coming from another forum where i knew everyone to having to make new friends again and read through peoples stories in order to appreciate what they are going through but im sure I will get to know you all really soon :hugs::hugs::hugs:

HI Sammy
