i just need it simplily put.
At the mo I am expressing and mixing with formula, but no idea what to do at night so I give her breastmilk during the night, just a case of heating it up and we're ready.

But I can see my supply will start to dwindle, so formula it'll have to be.

So, can i premake them or not? And what do i do, step by step, do i need to let it cool etc?

i want to be really careful considering how things have been!

wash and steralise everything

boil kettle with fresh water in it

leave kettle to cool for 20 mins

pour water into bottle up to required amount

put in scoops of powder

put on cap/teat with lid

shake for atleast 10 secs (i always put a clean tea towel over the bottle while i do this as if it leaks it burns!!)

cool down as quickly as possible in cold water

test on your wrist ( i test it half way between my wrist and elbow as my wrists are quite numb!!!)

feed!!

hope this helps you hun

thats how its 'officially' done anyway!! i always keep a few cartons of ready made in just incase i havent got kettle boiled ready etc etc so i can get her fed within seconds so long as i have a bottle steralised!

u can make the bottles and store them in the fridge for no longer then 24 hours but we are told not to do this now, ive always fed on demand with zane but after he hit 6 months if add boiled water to his bottle and leave it on the side till he was hungery then add the right amount of powder.

but if u wana make bottles on demand then the above info is good also it tells u how to make them on the tub x

always steralise

something i still do when i go out and also id do for night feeds is boil a kettle leave it for 20 mins then add it to a flask so it keeos the heat n then add the correct powder to a powder holder and add both to a bottle when needed

So if i was to get a feed ready for night, just do what sara said?

And do i let it cool before the fridge?

I only want to store for the night, the rest will be made up on demand you see?....

My health visitors unofficial advice was - make up the bottle with boiled water - it has to be at least 70 degrees to kill the bug in the powder, then run it under the tap - when cold put it in the back of the fridge - when you need it boil the kettle and stand the bottle in a jug of boiling water.
Tbh for the time it takes to boil a kettle you may as well have made it up fresh and cooled it down and yopure not going to worry about any bugs - or what we do, we buy cartons for night time feeds then it's just 2 1/2 minute sterilising.
Sma Gold are 9oz and Cow and Gate are 7oz cartons.

Everyone has different ways of doing it, It has all changed since i had my daughter ten years ago.

The way i do it is, i steralize all my btls, boil the kettle, leave the water to cool for 30mins, i then make up 4 btls and either leave them on the side or in the fridge. I add the powder as i need the feed.
Alex takes his at room temp so no need to heat up.
I make usre that i use the water within a 12 hour period but some allow 24hours.

I asked my HV as i was worried about doing it wrong and upsetting Alex (had a heart op and was poorly) and HV said that was an ok way to do it.

Good luck

This is all good advice but i have one formula from the billion samples we got that says do not add boiling water something about the culture in it but thats just one type. So i would check your formula for the best option. I think its a great idea for night time feeds to have the previously boiled water set aside in bottles and make one up. I was going to do the fridge option but i figure if baby will take room temp than why not thanx!!

i have one of them fisher price flask things so i do this.

in the evening boil and cool kettle, pour into flask and seal.

my bottles are ready sterilized and in the fridge. going to bed i take up bottles, flask and ready measured milk (in the TT milk dispensers) so when she wanted milk (she sleeps through now) i just poured water in from flask, added milk and fed. takes about 2mins so she doesnt spend ages crying for her food.

i sterilise boil kettle, let it cool for a bit no longer than 30mins, put water in, in my case its every ounce you put water you put one scoop. always put the water first cos you cant judge the water amount properly after you've put powder in, dont put anymore or less powder in than it says on the box. i cool my bottles in water then put them in the fridge. i make 4 at a time, and warm them in a jug of hot water then test on my wrist
xx

I gave up breast feeding over a month ago and just formula feed now. I make 4 bottles up at a time as per the instructions on the formula carton and store these in the fridge up to 24 hours. I can't make a bottle as I go...Emily would pass out from screaming for her feed if she had to wait 30 mins for me to make it. It just isn't pratical.
I usually take it out of the fridge and use a bottle warmer to heat up the milk. It is quick and easy.
You must ensure the bottles are cool before you put them in the fridge, not only does this deter from bacteria breeding but also makes sure your fridge is not working too hard to cool them down.

I pour the boiled water into my sterilised bottles and leave them on the side and add the formula to it when my son needs a feed.
At bedtiem i measure the formula out into the powder disenser and leave it in the bathrroom with the bottles so i don't have to go downstairs and make it up.
My son is happy to have his milk at room temp so i am lucky that i don't have to warm it up.

^ are you not worried about the bug in the milk doing it that way? It wont be 70 degrees so wont kill any possible bugs off.

I read your post earlier about that......i am gonna ask my HV about that (got me worried) i am going to carry on with it at the moment though as my son does seem to be ok and feeding well.....

I wouldnt worry too much - my hv said the possibility is slim of this bug being there to begin with - it's all just incase it is. :hugs:

haha who would thought making up bottles could be done in so many different ways though! Roll on when she can have sarnies!
