Was just wondering if anyone could help me. Last week my LO came down with flu like symptoms so i really didnt want to send my LO to the childminder, so me and my OH took a day off each to take care of him. I asked my childminder what happens with the fees i have paid for those two days, she told me that i get nothing back, i still pay in full?...is this right?

Also she told me that because of swine flu and my LO having flu like symptoms she could not take him the following week even if he had a runny nose only!?...am i right to think this is unfair for me? Im paying her to not even take care of him when she said she is unable to take care of him however i would be happy to drop him off there?! xx

Any advice would be great xx

Hi, unfortunatly/fortunatly childminders can set their own rules on pay. It should be in your copy of the contract and policies and procedures.
We have to pay half fee's for child/parent illness/occasional days off.

From what I understand about not attending next week is right, childminder has to protect both herself and the other children in her care.

I haven't yet discussed this with the lady who will be taking Oliver. But I would fully understand if she charged full wack for any sick days. She has to makea living and she has to protect this.

Thanks for replying. I did read my contract and it was saying that a fee was payable but i didn't think it meant the whole fee :dohh:...im not at all happy with that...i understand why they require full money but we lose money being off work...(as in my job i am classed as absent when a child is ill which means no pay)...yet im paying someone for not taking care of my son!!...so not impressed! x

We use a childminder and if Noah is sick we still pay full where as if she or one of her children is sick we don't pay.

Any holidays are taken as 1/2 pay as a retainer fee.

Yes any sick days are paid in full as it's not the childminders fault your child isn't there & it is also to retain your childs place etc. Some childminders do a half fee if your child is sick..now with regards to the week she said your child is off you need to refer to your contract hun, somewhere it will say once a child has had a certain illness they have to be off for a minimum of 24-48hrs with no symptoms at all before returning under the care of a childminder so yes she is within her rights to say your child can't go back for another 48hrs because of the flu but she should of also issued all parents with temp revised rules due to the swine flu outbreak & gotten all parents to sign etc Or she could of just amended her rules & given all parents 4wks notice or something incase you didn't agree then you have time to look elsewhere.
Without this i'm not sure what you can do tbh, As it may be outlined in her original rules that children with flu or flu like symptoms must be off for so long etc , if she hasn't made it clear in her rules they have to have another week off & yet she is saying she can not take your child then you should not have to pay.

not all childminders follow the same rules as they can make there own in their contract which each parent signs, have a look through all your paperwork & pm me if need be xx

As a ex childminder ...I can tell u when on the courses ect we are advised to charge when sick and agree the amount of holiday at time of contract being signed x

i saw on judge Judy a lady trying to get away with not paying a childminder when her LO was sick and the judge ruled in the childminders favour she said the minder is available for work and if your circumstances change thats tough, she compared it to a shop job and said a retailer still keeps the shop open even if the staff dont show up  whatever that ment!
