Ok I go back to work in April but as I work shifts - 6am starts and lates finish at 2am and Xmas periods etc I just don't want to work those hours now I'm a mum.

I'm thinking of legal secretary or medical secretary as I'm interested in being a secretary of some thought and think these 2 areas would beat suit me.
I work for the police currently and have previously worked in the health care industry.

Anyway I'm just wandering if anyone could give me some advice re salary, hours, benefits, What qualifications are needed and any down sides

I've had a quick look on line and pitman do courses so the plan is to enrol in a course so I can add that on my cv and hopefully get a job in the next year or so

I just want to work where I can still take summer to school and pick her up and not work most Xmas days !

Legal secretary work is really hard to get - employers want experience usually.
Medical work is also quite hard to get as, once again, they want experience.
But there are jobs out there - just be prepared to get a LOT of knock backs.

For both job the pay rate varies depending upon the company but it is usually more than the average admin rate (circa £7 per hour). Most admin jobs are 9 to 5 so childcare isn't an issue and I have noticed a big rise in the number of part-time roles. Admin roles are at least still being advertised unlike a lot of sectors where work has dried up altogether :nope:

I know the Job Centre used to provide training for admin roles within the NHS and if you were any good you got the job at the end of the 8 week course. Not sure if they are still available but worth speaking to the Job Centre.

Thanks for your reply

I have had a look into it a bit further and want to go with the legal secretary route and I have found a course I can do to help me get a job - now I just need to do it !!

HI

I'm a legal secretary, currently on maternity leave but back next week :(.

I work 9-5 Monday-Friday except Wednesday when i finish at 12.15. The firm I work at gives private health care as a benefit when you've been there a year and do a contributory pension scheme again after you've been there a year.

Neither of my two LOs are school age, although I know other secretaries are allowed relatively flexible hours if they need it for childcare. To be honest I think a lot of it depends on the employer. I've worked at 3 different solicitors, 2 of which were quite flexible and helpful.

Experience certainly helps (not necessarily legal), one of the downsides can be how stressful it gets through deadlines and demanding clients, and some solicitors can be quite arrogant (usually the ones who have been qualified for a long time).

If you've got any questions let me know

Thanks hun

Really appreciate your reply

Well fingers crossed I'll be able to complete a course which may help me

Good luck going back Hun - I'm so dreading already leaving my lo !
