Hey all , we found out at our 12 week scan and midwife appt that we may be getting induced around 38 weeks with it being a ivf pregnancy. They won't let me go near my due date In case I go over due - which they said they dont let ivf pregnancy do. they said it helps for us not to get to anxious. We r booked in for a scan a anc at 30 weeks and will be keeping a closer eye on me than normal.

Is anyone else in the same situation? Or anyone else getting induced around 38 weeks too?

I've never heard of inducing bc of Ivf. I personally don't think an induction is a good idea two weeks early... I was induced at 38 weeks and it was a disaster. I would speak to your dr and see if there's any possibility you can at least go to 40.

Well I thought too , I have all my questions for my next appt and ask exactly why - how ever I did read on fertilty friends forum today that it's very common for ivf pregancy not to go over as far as I read it said something about the placenta  it wast until after we left our appt we were unsure of it all ! So will ask more at next appt

I have never got induced at 38 weeks but I always have my babies at 38 weeks and some days...my labor with my last son started on the day I was exactly 38 weeks and all my babies have been big and strong at this gestational age.

Not sure all I can think of is due to being ivf are you classed as high risk ? . I was induced with my 3rd and it wasn't a bad experience so I'm neither for or against . I think I like the idea as maybe it doesn't give the placenta a chance to pack up xx

Yeah they said I will have more appt ect than normal and in my notes my pathway is marked as red amd resason ivf pregnancy! I have heard they class it as high risk - I didn't think there was any reasons ect if I did go over due  I all so read baby's are full term anyway around 37-38 weeks?

Well it's different for different women, some women naturally have 38 week pregnancies, some have 42 week ones. I'm generally of the opinion that the baby will come when it's ready. The whole placenta stops functioning thing is a bit of a red herring in my personal opinion, the doctors will tell you the risk doubles once you go past due, but what they don't tell you is that the risk goes from 0.5% to 1% - hardly a frightening statistic! (Or possibly 1% to 2% - I've seen both figures - but still, low risk)

I wouldn't let anyone induce me at 38 weeks just because of an IVF pregnancy. Does your body know that? Does the baby? They aren't different just because the initial fertilisation was by IVF, your body still grew and made the baby and I would trust it to know when to give birth.

Obviously if you have other complications (for me the only reason I'd look at induction would be something really serious, which really does have a risk involved like pre-eclampsia) then induction might begin to make more sense, but just because of an IVF pregnancy, no.

And remember, you don't HAVE to be induced, you don't HAVE to do anything, the doctors and midwives can advise, tell you the risks, explain what they think you should do and why, but it's always your decision, and me personally, I would go with watchful waiting - extra scans to monitor the functioning of the placenta if that makes the drs happy, but I wouldn't be rushing in for an induction at 38 weeks without a lot more answers and explanation.

Yes that's exactly what am doing at my next appt am happy with them keeping a closer eye on me but am completely new to the pregancy thing and everything that goes with it including being induced ect so i still have lots of question I need answered . I do want that suprise spur of moment labour

I would question that honestly? You don't have to be induced .

I would think it would be less f a problem with Ivf since the know the exact date of conception.

a baby at 38 weeks is still early , normal human gestation is between 40-42 weeks so your not actually over due until you go past 42 weeks

Give these a read

I'm being induced at 38 weeks as i have type 1 diabetes, i'd rather have a long haul induction than something go wrong which is likely with my control atm.

Thanks :) yeah like I said I will for sure be questioning this ans find out the facts exactly !! my weight could come Into it too but I guess we will know a lot more at our 30 week appt with the doctor - never know everything might look great and can keep going , they will keep an eye on me from them on in. I guess they will do what feels right closer to the time.

Was just intrested to see what other people's reason were for being induced :)

Hi
I was induced with all my children. First time because my son died and the other times because it's standard procedure after an unexplained stillbirth.
I was induced just after 37 weeks with all the subsequent children, first 2 with a pessary/gel and only needed one application, and with my youngest I was already 2 cm dialated when I turned up so they broke my waters and put me on an oxytocin drip.
My consultant is hoping that this baby will come at around 36-37 weeks and if not they will be inducing me again, but this time at 38 weeks.

So sorry to hear about your baby boy :hugs:

This.

To be fair, i don't know anyone personally who has done IVF. But, I can't imagine why that would instantly mean you need to be induced. Sounds more like a lazy doctor to me.

They haven't instantly made a set in stone dession but may be induced at 38 weeks it will all depend how things are looking from 30 weeks onwards! Was just inquiring seeing if anyone had the same or similar situation.
I have done some research and seen a few ivf pregnancy be induced at 38-38 weeks I haven't agreed to this like I sad I have to question this at my next appt

I will be induced at 39 weeks since I am high risk and on blood thinners :flower:

Ill be induced between 37.5 and 38.5 this time. I was induced at 39 last time due to a blood clotting disorder and this time it'll be earlier because my baby was 10 pounds. If I were you I'd start taking epo and get that cervix dilating because if your cervix hasn't started in its own induction can be rough but if it has, usually it's no biggie. My labor was awesome the first time. Delivery of my huge baby, not so much but labor, a breeze

Thank I see what u mean - I all so think am going to have a chunky monkey :) so just hoping thy one my 30 week appt everything looks ok :)

I'm being induced at 37 weeks. I was going to ask for that if the MFM hadn't mentioned it around 12 weeks. I know far too many people that had stillborns between 37 and 40 weeks and won't take the risk once they are ready to come out.

im sorry but unless you have a medical reason there is no reason to be induced because your scared..I know plenty of babies because mine are premies who where in the nicu born 36 -38 week who lungs and other stuff where not fully developed...

there is a reason these babies need to stay in more toward 40 if possible.....its safer and less chance of a still birth and other problems....

I can see if there is a medical reason but other then that....why put your baby at risk for having medical problems or even being still born because for this baby it was just to early??

many a mother in nicu who wished they just went to 39 weeks and did not press for an induction.

this is seen with my own eyes because i was in the nicu because my own premies..

i dont know about Ivf but I would push to go a bit further if able too and medically able too....
that sounds weird...:/
