I'm due to have a c section under general anthestic and I'm a bit nervous to be honest, my first child was an emergency section by epi so I was awake to see her. I have a couple of questions if anyone could help please?

1. How long between the time the baby is born to the time you wake up and get to meet baby?

2. What do they do with baby once they are born? Routine checks and then straight to father? Or does it depend on the individual?

3. Does the G A have any obvious effect on the baby?

Hope someone can help! Thanks.

I did with my first it wasn't planned it was emcs under ga i saw my baby a few hrs later he went straight to my mum my husband didn't get there in time. My little boy seemed fine he was a bit tired but i think they are anyway. I didn't get to hold him for 2days as i had to have a blood transfusion and a few other things not related to the section or the ga if you need anything else let me know i will answer if i can.

Thank you imm100 for answering my questions and sharing you experience :) xx

Hello :) I had an emergency C section with my son and had to be put under. I'm not really sure of the time frame between going in and seeing him but when I did come round in the room my little boy was having skin to skin with Daddy on his chest which was lovely to see and know he'd not been away from us for too long. Part of me wishes I could have had skin to skin straight away but seeing them together was so lovely and everything went well in the end. I wish you the best of luck! :D x

Aww that sounds lovely startmie! I would be happy if it goes the same way for me :) I'd be happy to wake up to baby and daddy bonding :) xx

I had my first c section under general as an emergency. I'm not 100% on how long it was between delivery and when I came round from my general but I know ds1 had had his checks and then was taken straight to my husband. When I came around ds1 was brought to me in the recovery room. The hospital were very keen on trying to establish feeding and were asking if I wanted to try while I was still in the recovery room having blood pressure problems! I don't know if there was any impact on ds1 from the anaesthetic but he was fine by the time I saw him.

I had an emcs which turned into an even bigger emergency and I was put under GA.

Dh was escorted outside as I was being put under. Ds was born, cleaned, weighed and dressed and then handed to dh in the corridor who had him the whole time. I struggled to come round so it was about 4 hrs after he was born that I saw him but tbh I was so out of it (due to 40 hr labour and lots of problems) I only registered him the following morning 12 hrs later :-(

The things I struggled with after the GA was the ventilation tube they put down - they put it down so quick I lost my voice and struggled to eat after and felt very groggy.

It would have been easier if it was planned though!

Why are your being put under GA? Usually they don't do that unless it's an emergency and they don't have time to do an epidural.

Why are they putting you under for a scheduled?
That is generally not done as the anaesthetic is bad for the baby- I had a GA as I had a placental abruption and never actually went into labour, parts of placenta just started falling out. Bub was groggy and had difficulty feeding and jaundice because of it.

It is absolutely horrible waking up 3 hours after your child is born...and still being so out of it u can't do anything for him or even register he's there for the next day or so!

I had a C-section under general anesthesia because it was an emergency, and I hadn't had an epidural. Our baby didn't make it, but they did bring him to me as soon as I woke up. I was able to hold him in the recovery room if I wanted to. Good luck with your C-section. Mine wasn't nearly as bad as everyone said it would be thankfully! General anesthesia can cause nausea, and I was very sick the last time I had general anesthesia. I made sure to tell the anesthesiologist this in the midst of all the craziness going on, and he gave me medicine to combat that before I woke up. I was not sick at all. Just a thought so maybe you can enjoy your new one without being sick! :)

I still have no idea the time frame of things; I was having an awful time wrapping my mind around everything they were trying to tell me. I know it wasn't hours and hours, but from the time it all started til I made it back to my room ( they let me stay in recovery longer because I was scared to death that I was going to bleed to death and my blood pressure was a little low anyway) it was about 2 hours total.

I kept waking up and freaking out and the nurse told me over and over I'd had my baby and I'd say "no I wasn't in labour, I've never had a contraction I was just bleeding a lot, that's why I'm here" I kept insisting I hadn't had him but apparently hubby was holding him on my chest the whole time!

Thank you all for your comments and experiences, the reason I will be having a GA is because I can't have anything put in my spine due to a neurological problem, it's not out of choice and If I did have a choice i would certainly want to be awake. I've had a section and a epidural with my daughter but that was before discovering the neurological problem, and it would be too much of a risk to give me any thing that involves my spine now they know what problems I have with my brain. There's loads of different issues I have to be honest which makes everything complicated. So hoping everything goes ok and more importantly baby is not affected by it, but hopefully it should be alright since it's going to be planned!

Thanks again ladies xx

I had an emcs under general.. lo was born at 23:45 and there is a photo of me holding her at 01:08 although i don't remember it too much! When she was born after the checks she was taken in her crib to my hubby and mum who were waiting in recovery whilst i got stitched etc x

I've got my date for next Thursday so getting Even more nervous now that its getting closer! Everything will be well planned so hoping it goes smoothly!
