I was talking to an acquaintance of mine who has a 6 week old baby. We were talking and she said that baby boys should not have iron.

Have you heard this? I've been feeding Chase formula with iron from way early on.

no I never heard that, granted Hannah's not a boy, but no one's ever said to me that she can only have the iron fortified formula because she's a girl. Was there a reason behind it?

I think she may have said why but I had a bunch of people talking at once that day or I've forgotten. LOL

Quite honestly, I think whoever told her that is a crock of poo poo.

She is breastfeeding and supplements with formula here and there. Maybe that is why? But I can't see that.

never heard the leeanne! i too think its probably not correct, surely it would say on the tin if it were true?

^^Agreed. Plus if it were true wouldn't BF moms need to avoid foods high in iron if they had a boy??? Maybe she just meant that since she's BF to avoid formula with iron because it may be hard on his tummy (not necessarily because the child is a boy?)

I don't think this is right, I've just looked on our tin and it has iron in it. But the hv knows which formula he is on cos she asked the other day

Nope, she said it...boys shouldn't have iron.

She has a baby boy too.

Strange one, isn't it? Don't know where the heck she got her info as I've never heard of this one before.

Oh, and here's another thing she said. Her little guy hasn't gone poop for days so I said maybe he's lactose intolerant. "boys should not be on soy milk either."

Seriously, she's been fed a bunch of crap.

Not true, all babies need iron, though they really don't need any extra until 6mo because of what's stored up from you. But the iron fortified formula is fine for all babies, unless the rare few that it causes problems like constipation due to too much iron

can baby boys not have soy??? my gp has put archie on wysoy milk as hes lactose intolerant...he said lf milk was too expensive and only if a baby was showing malnutrition(which archie def isnt malnourished) he said soy was the better option for him..im a bit concerned now

I dont understand why would boys not need/have iron but girls do? Whats the difference?

What a random thing to say

My friend son was suspected lactose intolerant now been confirmed he's not. BUT the gp said not to give boys soya milk if they can help it before 6 months because it has oestrogen in it.

As for Iron perhaps she means too much can cause constipation hence mummies who bf shldn't take supplements with iron in them, cos large amounts would pass through baby but wldn;t matter if b or g?

No, I heard all babies need a lot of iron to help them grow, especially after 6 months.

Yeah they do, they make low iron formula but it's only supposed to be used if your baby has a problem with it, not based on sex.

I've heard the same aout soy milk, but it's for all ages, not just under 6mo. Some people don't think it's true but some do, kinda like everything else lol. Our pediatrician told us the same thing whe Hayden couldn't handle dairy, turned out he couldn't handle soy either so he did rice milk, but then the allergist we saw said it was a bunch of crap. But I've done alot of research on my own and choose not to give them much soy at all
