my OH has just started a job working 12 hours a week, hes been there 4 weeks and they have not paid him ONCE. He is supposed to be paid every week on a Friday.

Now they have taxed him over £60. Surely that's not right? its their mistake they didn't pay him for 4 weeks so why should he loose nearly a weeks wages in tax?...

What should he do?...

ETA: took in the P45 before he started there so it cant be emergency code.

ETA again: just found out the tax code is differnt to the one on his P45! - the fuckers havent bothered to get the right tax code! so when are we likely to get this tax back!!!

Perhaps he's on an emergency code as he's just started. You can earn a certain amount before paying tax, number of hours worked doesn't matter. He needs to check his tax code and speak to his HR department or HMRC if they aren't much use.

He was on JSA for 6 months before and earn t nothing in the 6 months before that, so i know he cant have earnt above the tax threshold!, i genuinely don't understand why they have taxed him! - and charged NI on his earnings, when you can earn £145 a week before being charged NI, he earns less than £60!!

first you need to check his tax code PAYE tax means they look at the pay then work out how much earning x amount a week/month (ie if you earnt £100 a week you would make £5200 a year and therefore not pay tax) you will earn in a year by the looks of it as he should of been paid weekly but got 4 weeks pay in one week they would of taxed him asif he would be earning that every week
as the weeks go on they will realize that he shouldn't of paid that tax and he should get a rebate

So the way they work it out for tax purposes is that they assume you'll earn that much each pay period for the rest of the tax year and so will tax you according to how much that would come to... What will happen is that you'll get the tax back in the next few pay packets as the calculations change... Don't think you'll get any of the NI back though...
