I have recently lost my job and have been told that I can apply for housing benefits. I have a mortgage however, so I believe if succesful, they pay the interest on your mortgage.. anyone know if you need to have a certain mortgage for them to do this? I have a fixed rate mortgage for 5 years. Its not an interest only mortgage. does this matter? will the benefits office still help me? I hope I dont have to remortgage to a different type :/

I didnt think you could claim housing benefit if you had a mortgage, i was sure you had to be renting either with council or private.

Im not sure how it works exactly but, My friend and her Hubby got laid off in a very shock turn around..
And they have a Mortgage to wich the Council have awarded them Housing benefit, Allthow iam not sure if theres is intrest only sorry. Good luck. x .

Hi

Housing benefit cannot be awarded if you do not rent your home however your local authority may have another scheme in operation that works in a similar way.

You will be able to claim Council Tax Benefit and I know that sometimes The Department of Work and Pensions can help with mortgages.
