April Mummies 2011

GO ALEENA! Rosie had some broccoli the other night. She loved hodling it. She also had a little piece of artichoke. I bit a chunk of the meaty stuff off and let her chew it. She made the funniest face.
Question: When (if) Aleena takes a REALLY BIG BITE- do you take it back from her? Or just wait for her to spit it out. I have these teething biscuits and Rosie bites off huge chunks. She does with lots of veggies too.
I ended up spoon feeding Rosie some oatmeal since it was the only thing I had with me at work when she came. She loved it. I can't give her purees- she spits them out at me.

Lilly - Aleena is gorgeous :) Looks like shes really enjoying her food!
Just wondering though is it safe (swallowing wise) to give them whole foods like that at this age when they have no teeth? :S

Dana - Congrats! :D

Ah ollie is so un-interested in crawling.... yet he walks for ages when you hold his hands! Im sure hes doing it all the wrong way around haha. Hes also started trying to pull himself up using furniture and can stand holding on to things easily!
I want him to at least butt shuffle or something before he walks though so I can get used to running around after him! xD
Move slower while butt shuffling as opposed to walking!

it's all good with the foods gem. Look into Baby Led Weaning. :D

I dont do baby led.
Ive been giving him food since the day he turned 4 months!
But now Im scared about giving him like foody food (instead of the goopy crap hes been having the past 2 months :P) because he has no teeth to chew! D:

rosie squishes food with her tongue. She hate purees (although I still try here and there...) and just spits them out at me. She loves food though. I've been giving her things since 4months too but it's always been chunky. Mostly large pieces of hard things for her to suck/chew on.

Actually they have more risk of choking with purees than with pieces of foods.
With purees they learn how to swallow first, with BLW they learn to chew first.
If theres a little clump in the puree, a puree fed baby might not know what to do.

And yes they can chew without teeth, you just have to steam the veggies.
I let her do whatever she wants to do, when she bites off a big piece, she'll gag a little and then she'll spit it out.. she knows what to do!
I love BLW because it teaches your child how to self feed at an early age, well we breastfeed so she's been self feeding from birth actually.
It also teaches your baby different textures, tastes, smells and how to pick things up and eat them.
Also a big one is, that BLW is about baby SELF feeding, so no pushing like 'You need to eat more' . your baby knows what they need.
Love it!

Gem I understand where you're comin from as with Jake I was the same! They just chew with the gums. It's quite funny to watch! Also he may gag a few times when he swallows as he won't be used to it. If I could see Jake wasn gonna swallow a bit, I'd hook my finger in his mouth and get it out.
I'm trying Amelia out on finger foods when she gets to 6 months.
I also puree but do often wonder if she prefers while food as she gnaws away on it yet, like Rosie, will spit puree out!

Can't believe our Los are at or almost 6 months!!! Think how fast that went, and that again, they'll soon be a year old!

On a separate note, cannot wait for Christmas!! I'm going to start hiding presents at my mums as jake is more into it this year. He'd be a sod and try opening them I I left them underneath the tree!

Isis will also spit out chunks that are too big for her to eat. I don't clear them for her, I let her resolve the chunks.
I read the book about BLW. I really like the approach. I wanted to make sure Isis could handle finger foods. When Isis started grabbing foods and eating them I let her as long as they were age-appropriate. She's had a very wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Her teacher is starting to realize that Isis loves eating solids and can handle quite a bit of the "big kid" foods. She does have cereal for breakfast but so do I. I make sure it tastes good and it has banana chunks so it's not strictly a puree. I also don't make her eat any more food than she asks for and I let her self feed with the spoon as well. She self feeds about 50% of the time with a pre-loaded spoon.

Rosie also likes preloaded spoons. I don't force her to eat. She lets me know when she wants another bite if she has a spoon. She makes all kinds of funny noises and breathes heavy while trying to lunge for the spoon. When she stops showing that much interest then I just hand her the spoon to play with.

Hey ladies just at work at the moment finished at 11 last night and was back in at 5.30 this morning we also have a christening this afternoon so I am going to be exhausted.

Daniel is on the traditional weaning route but I don't puree completely there are little lumps but I want to introduce healthy finger foods from 6 months what do people suggest and how do you do it i.e. do you give a puree and then a finger food or offer as snacks throughout the day - I have to say this weaning process is the most complicated thing I have ever done it is a mindfield!!!

Baby, I'm doing TW too & I've just started to give Rex some finger food after his lunch so he can play with it while I make & eat my lunch. I've started with chunky strips of cooked veg. He loves playing with it! Next I'll probably try some mushy fruits, then when he's 6 months try some rice cakes & toast etc.

It's been a while due to being away, broadband problems and just how busy it is day to day but I thought I'd pop in and say hi.

Sorry to the ladies who have poorly relatives, it is a horrible thing to go through and you all have my best wishes and thoughts.

Our babies are growing up so fast! I can't believe how quickly it is going and how big they are all getting! Who would have thought that 5/6 months could fly by so suddenly!

Lots of love to you and all our gorgeous small people :flower:

Personally, I dont like the idea of baby led :/ Especially since if I relied on Ollie to control his food intake himself kinda thing then he'd probably starve. After the battle I had trying to get him to feed those first few weeks of his life then swerve that! He'll eat when I give it him haha!
Hes still small aswell so he needs that little bit extra to get his growth on the right track!

But, he does turn 6 months on Friday (ah scary! half a year so soon!) so as soon as that day comes Ill be giving him some chopped up fruit to play with / taste. But only when my mum is with me because Im a big scaredy cat and Im TERRIFIED of choking!

Ah gem it's natural to feel scared! I know I was!! That's great Ollie is thriving now!
I have to be honest and say I also prefer purees as I have more time to control my toddler, if I'm feeding her myself, whereas I wouldn't feel safe leaving her to her own devices and not being able to fully watch her! Saying that, she is kinda on finger foods.

Today she had, watermelon, red pepper, grape that I held, attacked my chocolate muffin, and lunged at my sandwich lol of course I let her lick it but wouldn't feed it. She is such a gannet, I swear she must be around 16lbs. I'm getting her weighed at 6 months so we shall see.

Good to hear from you amethyst!! I was thinking of you yesterday funnily enough (not in a stalkerish way!).

Omg it's so warm today and I swear I'm burnt but can't yet see it, mainly my face. We went to a park in Reigate and had a picnic, but had fo rush back so oh could watch the football :dohh:

If she's only 16lbs, Jakes, your little Miss makes my Little Miss seem fat. Anberlin was 15lbs 2.5oz on Wednesday and she'll be 5 months old on Tuesday.

wow I'm not sure how much Aleena weighs but I think around 16-17 lbs and she'll be 6 months on friday!

Rex was 16lb 12oz at his last lot of jabs & that was over a month ago! He's really long/tall & chunky iykwim. Def not fat just a sturdy boy!!! Need to get booked in at baby clinic to get him weighed properly again.

36 hours with no feeding & I'm in PAIN! Owwww! Was only doing 2 feeds a day (morning & bedtime) & my boobs always felt soft then. But they are engorged in a big way. Ow ow ow  I know I have to sit it out & not pump but it's tough! Currently sat with ice packs on & have taken some cold relief tablets with decongestant & paracetamol in. Hope the decongestant dries me up!!!

George is over 16lbs, i think thats a nice weight for him as he isn't to fat but also isnt skinny. Just nice, and i love his chubby thighs.
