Are you still drinking coffee?

Hiya,

I have around 2 cups of tea a day and occasionally a coffee, mainly as I went off it completely for the first few months but now if I fancy it I have it.

I think as long as you stick within the recommended limits then you'll be fine.

I remember reading something on here about different attitudes to drinking coffee - I think the poster was from holland where they continue to drink coffee with no ill effect yet in some parts of the world people have the fear of god put into them.if they dare have a coffee.

Everything in moderation :) xx

With my first I was ultra cautious and didn't have ANY caffeine, and with my youngest I had a little bit. I always avoided it in the first trimester though. With this pregnancy I started with 2 cups of coffee a week and in the second trimester 2 cups of coffee a day. We inject preemies with straight caffeine in doses that you couldn't even imagine. Very high doses helps with breathing issues(bronchiopulmonary dysplasia and apnea), and reduces the risk of cerebral palsy. Any neonatologist will tell you the avoiding caffeine thing during pregnancy must be some sort of cruel joke to make pregnant women even more miserable. I actually had one of the neonatologists I work with tell me that. HA!

Now I'm NOT advising to go out and start in-hailing coffee, but for low risk pregnancies, drinking coffee in moderation should be fine. None of the 3 OB's I've had said there was any reason to stop drinking it, just don't have more than 3 cups a day. Always talk to your OB about it though!

I drink coffee everyday! I've been having 2 cups at least since about week 10. Then I have a coke every night. :coffee: My bebe is doing just fine!

The standard is 50mg/kg of caffeine citrate, given in a bolus over 15-20min. Dosage and frequency obviously vary based on the individual patient. I think I will bring it up with my OB at my next appointment. The problem is I am high risk, so I've been trying to follow all recomendations to the letter. However my problem is blood clotting, which I don't think really relates to my caffeine intake. I think I'm just going to stop worrying so much about it. (However now I have to get my husband to agree! He watches what I eat more than I do, haha.)

I agree about the lack of caffeine being some sort of cruel joke! That made me laugh, thanks! :haha:

i was actually "prescribed" caffeine from my midwife after a fainting spell and low blood pressure. I was going without for the first few months, then was told by her that the march of dimes has no problem with caffeine and no studies have proven ill effects. But thats for up to i think 500 mg so like a cup or two of coffee a day. I was so happy i missed it so much! I look foreward to my nice hot cup of coffee every morning to get me through my exhausting days!

I have my 1 cup per day doc says its fine xxx I don't think I could function without my morning cuppa - lol

I drank coffee the same as I always did and my baby was fine. I drank decaf for a while but someone told me the chemicals they use to decaffinate coffee were even worse than the caffein so I switched back.

Yeah, the chemicals used to decaffeinate some of the cheaper brands (think your average store brand) aren't great. I avoid them, pregnant or not. But if you do want decaf, look for coffee that's been decaffeinated by Swiss Water Process. It's natural (just using water) and tastes better too. Some of the higher quality brands do it this way (Lavazza, but not Illy or Starbucks) or if you go to a specialist coffee shop, they should have the SWP decafs marked somehow.
Wow thanks for telling me this. I never even knew this. So u should just limit your coffee intake period when your pregnant

I hardly drank it for the first 2 months. But then I started getting wicked migraines that lasted a week and were sooo excruciatingly painful that I would end up cramping, so I had to start again.

In college, I used to drink like 8+ cups a day (SO BAD!!) but before pregnancy I had been drinking maybe 4. Now I never drink more than 2. And if I have tea, I only have 1.

I usually only drink one a day, or even one half cup. But if my migraines are bad, I will drink 2. Yeah. ^^ I also heard the same about decaf!! The chemicals are dangerous stuff. When people get self-righteous about their decaf against my coffee addiction, I say "hey - did you know....?" lol.

Coffee does have some definite health benefits for adults, in moderation. =) I'm going to try to convince my LO to hold off until at least 16 or 18 before drinking it though!! And not start at 12/13 like me... >_> Maybe I would've been tall like my little sister who never drank it, lol.

I drink an uced latte everyday! Sometimes a soda later on... :/. But im not worried about it.

I've switched to decaf tea and coffee at home, but I'm still drinking normal, caffeinated tea and coffee at work or out and about. I just make sure I stick to one cup a day. Sometimes my one cup of caffeine will be a Diet Coke (mmmmm...!).

I drink usually 1 nespresso machine coffee. mmmmm. Or I have a iced latte if its hot.

The way I permit myself this luxury is the coffee allowance is based on an average sized woman. Average being about 5ft3. I am 5ft11 so I have a hell of a lot more mass!

The NHS says you can have up to 200mg of caffeine per day throughout pregnancy DH and I decided at the beginning the NHS would be our rulebook, as we trust it and there is so much conflicting advice. I usually have 2 cups of tea and one can of pop each day.
When I was in antenatal class as my friend's birth partner, the MW actually said having a few cups of coffee in the third tri is a good idea as it will give baby a tolerence to caffeine - if not she has mum's frantic when breastfeeding who have a cup of coffee after 9 months without, then wondering why baby won't sleep xxx

This is very interesting. I'm def going to look more into this! I don't know if I can handle being up with a baby most of the night, and not being able to have coffee in the morning. I didn't even think about coffee and bfing! :dohh:

Coffee really doesn't have an impact on me! I used to be able to drink like, 4-5 cups of coffee hoping it'll wake me up and it never really did. I just drink coffee to drink coffee so it was easy to give up up until recently. My favorite seasonal blend came into a small coffee shop so I had to order some and I've had about half a cup of that a day - much more than that and I get nauseous!
