Me and OH have two boys names that we've always loved. We're really struggling to pick a name, but it's mainly because the two names I've loved since I was really young have become popular in the last 3 years or so. I really don't want to give LO a common name, having had a pretty common name myself I know how annoying it is in school etc. But at the same time we both love these names, I always have, and we really can't think of any others

Do you think popularity matters? xx

I dont think it matters too much about popularity, it really depends on your personal opinion and whether it bothers you or not. I think its more important that you like the name. xx

if you love it then it doesnt matter at all!

If you've loved these names for a long time, then obviously they are important to you. And the fact that they are popular names just means a lot of people agree with you!

I don't think it matters, if you like it, go for it! :D

:hugs:

to me it never mattered we named our son Jacob and its the most common name ever it seems and there is only one other Jacob in his grade right now so we did get lucky on that but it still wouldnt matter either way to me we loved the name and it fits him perfect :)

It's hard enough to find a name you love... and even harder to find a name you and your OH both love! I think that is much more important than how popular a name is...

Care to share the names?

OH wants us to keep it secret until LO is born so we can still have one surprise, as everyone already knows we're having a boy. So I'm afraid I'm not allowed to tell :dohh: xx

If one more person calls their dog "Molly" in the park I might slap them, but really... I don't care. I think it's the cutest name ever and the one OH picked for her, so means a lot to me. If you like it, go for it! :D

We didn't want a popular name either. Luckily we were able to come up with a few less popular names that we love. Since you still really love just those two, than it sounds like you should stick with them anyway.

As long as you like it, I dont think it matters.

My son is Matthew which is common but turns out he was the only Matthew in preschool and the only Matthew in his year :) I love his name thats all that matters x

For me I grew up with one of the top 10 names in Canada... and I absolutely hated being named "Sarah P." instead of Sarah... so for me I am going to try my hardest to give our children uncommon but beautiful names.

I was like this! There were about 8 other people in my year at secondary school with same name as me so I tried to choose something that I loved, but that wasn't that common. However now I have heard SO many children called it (Lucas)!!! Oh well, I am a bit disappointed that it is becoming so popular! I still love the name!

No it doesn't matter because even if it is not popular, it can very well become popular like my sons did!

It's such a pain. I think my hesitation to give a popular name comes from having a pretty popular name myself. I was one of about 6 Katy/Katies when I was at school and therefore also know how annoying it is to spend your whole life as "Katy T" rather than just Katy. OH's name isn't common at all, so he doesn't really "get" why it's an issue, so that's why he's still really keen on both names. xx

I was always one of 3 kids with the same name in my class. It came to a head in college when i was in the same class (6 people in my class) who had exactly the same first middle and sirname as me.

Its hard having an identiy when your always the 'other' jack or brown haired jack

Personally i wouldnt choose a common name but thats probably because of my expereince and my child will probbaly hate me for giving them a very unusual name which makes them stand out from the crowd :) Its all swings and round abouts - you cant really win, what ever you do!

Well my name is common but the spelling isn't, Aimee. How about changing the spelling if you love the name?
