Baby name pronunciations

Its pronounced Neev

The Irish spellings are the worst to read and say!!

My friend has a daughter called meev.... It's spelt maebh?!?!

Haha..... We've got one of those awful Irish names!!!

Aoife- ee-fa

Love it!! Though she gets all sorts...... A-ofie (as in Sophie with an a) and oh's grandma calls her thea and ee-tha! Ill let her off cause she's cute though!!!!

Micah is pronounced 'My-ka' but we often get 'Meek-a', one HV even asked me (after I'd said his name out loud) whether we'd named him after the annoying one-hit-wonder singer Mika! :dohh: It's an Old Testament name!

Oh and my friend keeps calling him Misha :s

We also had his immunization letters sent to 'Milah' :/

Here it it is good so far, just a couple of miss-spellings as we spell her the German/french/scandinavian way, with 'ie' at the end, and not the more common English way with 'y' Which is ironic as we live in Germany. More issues is her surname which is oh's. it is 'Baines' and people who don't know otherwise pronounce it German. ' By-nes' (2 syllables) .

my girls called Lena and me and my oh say it different. he says lee-na whereas I say lay-na. she's also been called Lela. ugh

Its not so much pronounciation that people get wrong with my 2, its the spelling!!

Thomas has been spelt Tomas and Tommas.
Abigail Caitlyn has been spelt Abbegale Abigale Catlin Caitlin Caitlain Katlin.
Then people make out we have spelt it wrong, um no, we have spelt all names the most popular way and they are our children - YOU have it wrong!!
Sorry ladies, mini rant!

A girl in my class is called Aishah, and some staff pronounce it 'Eye-shah' and some 'Eye-ee-shah', as she can't talk we asked her parents and turns out even they can't decide! Her mum says 'Ay-shah' (ay rhymes with say) and her dad says 'Eye-ee-shah'!

Now we're even more confused!

It's spelling here too that people have a problem with. 90% off cards received were to Darcy not Darcey. I let people away with it as theyd only heard the name. However, we then received christmas cards back from people with it spelt wrong. This is after them getting thank you cards and christmas cards with us obviouslt using the correct spelling. I didn't think I'd picked a name that she'd have to spell out constantly her whole life!

My eldest Marissa is often called Melissa i don't think people really listen to what others say. We pronounce is Maris-a . she is 15 and the only one we know locally.

I hear all your pain. Would have got about half the names mentioned right. Once i come across a new name to learn i try and associate it with a mental picture in my head of a thing or something. Normally helps.

Youngest is Evangelina guess what she gets called.... Angelina o is that after Angelina Jolie or Evangeline after Evangeline lily. grrrrrrr

People can be a bit rude why did you choose that with disbelief or surprise in their voices. Usually when i say it means "bringer of good news" shuts them up .She was such good news when we realised i was expecting it just fitted.

My grandad used to say to me why can't you girls (me and sis) choose nice ordinary names like Mary or Jane. I took great delight in saying but Marissa is a form of Mary. He didn't mean it nastily he just really could not get a grip on the names or understand why we choose different ones.

No I agree it doesn't......still love the Irish names though. Plus it's nice to have something a bit different!

Everyone pronounces it like tayo some evenbsay tio!

My aunt insists on spelling Alex - Alexs.

Loads of people pronounce Tori's name Torry (like, Lorry?) Its (Toe-ree) :grr:

It's good your tolerant of people getting it wrong, I know people can get a bit funny when not pronouncing names correctly. A friend of a friend (a new mum so won't post it just in case she's on here!) gets so aggregated when people pronounce hers wrong... It's a bog standard name that's pronounced completely different to the usual way.
I blame the parents:haha:!!!

My Son's name is nice and simple..I wanted something easy and traditional because people get my name wrong all the time. I don't think it is difficult..Kristen but I get all different variations..Christy, Christian, Kirsten, etc..and everyone wants to spell it with CH when I say it. When I was a kid I would say think of the boys name Chris and the number 10 and put it together..Simples but people would still get it wrong..hahaha

Aliss..I got both of your LO names correct but I work for a French company so have a lot of co-workers with those names.

I hate it when parents can't decide how to pronounce their kid's name! My brother has a daughter called Mayah. When she was first born they said My-ah, then the next time I saw them (prob 6 months later) it was May-ah.

Wow looks like most have this problem!

Shame on some of you, not knowing your own kid's name

I think some people are just dumb. Lots of people call Isabelle 'isabella' even though they know there's no a. Strange.

Our little boy will be called Joel (pronounced jole) and I bet some people will call him Joe-el.

Haha... Sooo the parents fault!! I really don't see the point in getting annoyed... To be fair to others we did choose a more unusual name and did know it had an unusual spelling before we had her....so we kind of expected it! Had we called her something more regular and everyday then I'd probably get annoyed if no one could pronounce it.... Plus every one that actually knows her knows how to say it!!!!

Yep I find people spell his name wrong a lot too! His names Finley, but we've had Finlay (also very common), but also Finn-Leigh and Finally :dohh: Now I would pronounce that as in 'it's finally here!'.
