I gave birth yesterday afternoon and my son has yet to cry for a feed. He was given formula bout 45 mins after birth and took 50ml, wasn't sick. I was concerned when he did not cry for anything and after 4 hrs I tried to give him some more milk, he was uninterested and did not take any until half 12 this morning. His next feed was 0430 (20ml), then 1130 (35ml) then 1725 (25ml). He NEVER cries, not when he's wet or pooed. I can't understand why he doesn't cry if he's hungry. He seems a very happy baby as is always making cute noises and never seems unhappy or fretful, I am just worried as if I left it to demand feeds as midwife suggested he would only feed every 8 hrs or something silly. Is there anything wrong with him or is he just one of those babies? I feel worried, I'm having to pay attention to him every second as he is not telling me what he wants if that makes sense

Congratulations on your new baby! They can be quite sleepy in the first day so as long as you are offering the milk frequently I wouldn't worry. I think it is likely to pick up a bit more during the next 24 hours so you should see him waking more frequently for his milk. Birth is tiring for babies too so I think it is ok for them to be a little slow to get started at first.

Thanks, he had a full 4oz last night and wasn't sick and seems much more alert today. Think was having a bit of a panic as my first wanted feeding every 3 hrs from the off lol. He's going about every 4-5 hours but is taking more x

My son was like that, even now at 2 weeks 5 days he does not really cry for milk, we have now learnt to read his non verbal hunger cues (lip smacking, chewing hands, rooting) and then feed him. I guess some children are just very contented. DS was 10lbs 7 ounces at birth so it was assumed he would be hungry all the time but he is not.

My daughter STILL rarely cries - knowing her now, you can tell when she's getting hungry but for a good few months I mentally regarded 4 hours as the absolute cap on when I'd let her go between feeds and just did it that way (she was prem with low birth weight so we had to keep absolutely on top of it) - I assumed she'd grow out of it as she got older and more alert but she didn't - it's just her personality.

Apparently I was similar as a baby too.

i found crying was one of the last hunger cues to appear..... if you touched her cheek and she started to root was a far more reliable sign for us

I remember the first 24 hrs, my LO slept loads! then it was like a switch was flicked and all she wanted to do was feed, however I was BF at the time so think its a bit different..

anyways my point is I was told they are very very sleepy at first, but dont let them go more than 4hrs without a feed as a rule of thumb, they need it at this point to flush out any jaundice which may be coming :)
