Hello ladies,

My baby is 1 week 1 day old today. While at the hospital we were giving her Similac Advance. However, it seemed to be too rough on her tummy and on Thursday night we switched her to Enfamil. She has 1 BM on Friday then nothing at all Saturday. I searched the internet and found most people suggesting to insert a qtip with vaseline to stimulate her to poop, which I must say worked. She pooped like crazy. However, again Monday, no poop :( so I had to do the same thing. The pediatrician says its normal when switching formulas and that they can take up to 5 days for their stomach to adjust to the change. However, I find that to be horrible and torturous. I also do not want to make baby dependent on my helping her poop. Can anyone offer advice. I'm a first time mom and its driving me crazy! I feel so bad for her I don't know what to do. Should I change her formula again to maybe Enfamil Gentlease or GoodStart Gentle?

Any input would be appreciated! Thanks

My LO seems to find it difficult to poop too so me and OH cycle her legs whilst she's laid down, rub her belly, give her cooled boiled water to drink with. Little gripe water added and that's about it! We always know when she's du one as she's so grumpy & looks in pain! X

Well, it's not great to be switching formulas frequently, but if it were my baby in this case I would because I'd doubt it will resolve itself - some gas or something like with a new formula sure, but constipation on both of those formulas sounds like she's just having a hard time digesting them. Either Enfamil Gentlease or Gerber Good start are much easier to digest and I've used both and my lo does better on Good Start. I personally feel better about the ingredients in Good Start also (whey protien as the first ingredient instead of corn syrup solids). Gentlease is a good formula for tummy issues too though, it really depends on the baby what one they do best on, does sound like your lo needs to be on one that had the protiens partially broken down for easier digestion though.

After talking to a few friends w kids we decided to go with Good Start Gentle. Although she has not pooped yet we can see she feels better, sleeps more now, less fussy and overall happier. Now we just wait for the poop lol. also bought biogaia as suggested by a friend who had a similar problem. I hope to find poop soon!

Thanks Ive started the belly rubbing and bicycle motion. I will need to get some gripe water.

When you say constipapted is the poop hard and firm or does it just seem like she is having a hard time going? if she is grunting and straining that is actually normal for an infant while they are learning to go. You might try giving a little extra water to make her poop less firm but you are right that you do not want to make her dependent on you to go.

Well her poop is not hard or firm. She just wasnt going on her own since we had switched to enfamil. Her little stomach was firm and I could tell she was not comfortable. Luckily it seems maybe the switch to Good Start might have helped a little. She pooped this morning... a lot! She looked so relieved and well so was I! First time she pooped on her own since Friday of last week!!! I just hope it stays that way.

My lo was constipated at about 4 weeks old, my Public Health Nurse told me to give her some cooled boiled water about a couple of ounces and I second rubbing her tummy.Worked a treat.

Rubbing tummy definitely helps, but make sure that you rub in anticlockwise circles.... :)

DS still likes having his tummy rubbed even now. :)
