Baby's only 1/5 engaged at 38 weeks?

Hi ladies,

Does this mean I'm going to have AGES to wait 'til baby makes an appearance? I was so sure she must be more engaged than that and I am so BORED of being on maternity leave (hopefully I will not actually die of boredom before baby arrives) and now I'm really depressed that I might end up having to be induced. Have decided midwife did not seem v. hopeful that baby would arrive before due date as she said to book in to have a sweep on my due date and if that doesn't work, they can do another a few days later.

Sorry, but am feeling really grumpy and fed up this morning. The thought of waiting possibly another three weeks - arrrrrgggghhhhhhh! Plus now I'm worried baby is not engaged enough as she is not going to fit through my pelvis!

I wouldn't worry about it it tends to be only first babies that go down and stay down. Here's hoping your not waiting too much longer to meet you baby x

My LO is only 1/5th engaged and I'm due today. My MW said that some babies just leave it right up until the last minute to get engaged so I wouldn't worry

My LO went between brim and 3/5th until labour when contractions bought him down. xx

1/5th engaged means baby is really well in the pelvis. it goes by how much of the lo's head the mw can feel above the brim.

In your case its only 1/5th which is really good

1/5th is really good. Means he's nearly there! It works the opposite way round to what you think it would....so like th eabove poster said its how far down in the pelvis he's got to go!

Thanks ladies. Midwife actually said head is '4/5s palpable' so she can still feel that much above the rim Am cheering up a bit now though that I am not the only one where baby has not been that engaged by this time.

I think I had been so sure baby would come early, despite being told first babies are usually late, that now I feel disappointed!

Oh, when my MW said 1/5th she said he was just above the rim and still needed to find a route down She did write 4/5ths on my notes though, I got confused that she used both terms but now it makes a tiny bit more sense!

Mine is only 1/5th engaged too, dont worry hun. 1st babies engage and others dont usually. Hopefully your lil one will just snuggle down nicely in labour!

I wish mw's and doctors would all write the same thing. Some write down how many 5ths they can feel or 'palpate' and some write down how many 5ths engaged intot the pelvis the baby is. I always write how many 5ths into the pelvis the baby is as then mum can see how engaged the baby actually is, as it easier, very frustrating though as everyone does it differently.

Sounds like your baby is 1/5th engaged though x

Mine was engaged and then yesterday mw said he has popped back out!!!! Lil bugga I thought once first babies engage they tend to stay there but nope! Xx

Im 4/5ths today on my due date hah. Just focus on the baby coming on your due date, that way you dont stress out as much. Well at least until you reach your due date haha
