Its very popular here in South-Africa... dont know if you know what it is? I was just wondering if I can eat it? because I ate a whole bunch this afternoon and im now worried that I shouldn't be eating it.... because my tummy is a bit upset now..

Hi

I am also from South Africa. :happydance:

There are different views on eating biltong (dried meat with some spice) while being pregnant. Some say it's safe because we have very good quality meat etc. but most books, people and my gynae says it's safer not to eat it because it may contain listeria (which you can get from uncooked or undercooked meat).

Some of my friends had biltong through out their pregnancies, so don't worry to much.

Have a lovely day.

Yeah stardust - a south-african maatjie ;)

Thanks, I think im going to avoid eating biltong just to be on the safe side from now on...

I'd give biltong a miss during pregnancy. My Best friend is from South Africa and is addicted to it so I get some of my overseas contacts to send me some every couple of months for her.

As far as I know you should only eat properly cooked meat so any dried meat is off the menu such as biltong, salami, pepperoni (unless cooked), Chorizo (again can be eaten cooked). I never quite got the taste for Biltong but I know my friend will hate having to give it up!

Hello julle, ek is ook van SA... I have a craving for it but do not have the guts to eat it, I am scared that it is not save.

Pregnancy no 1 let me know how you feel and I might give it a go... I eat sushi so I dont see why I cant eat biltong...

Nice to know you are from SA YEA GO BOKKE

Lucky No.2, Sushi is different. It is safe if it has been frozen which kills any bugs in it which could make you sick. Biltong wont have been put through this process.

Ja I am just saying that eating (forbidden) food is not always a no no some of us still eat the food that they should avoid, and it is a personal choice.

Sushi is a (forbidden) food and we still eat it..
Biltong is a (forbidden) food and some of us still eat it, I know a lady here she is 28w and her only craving is grated biltong, I think if you eat proper dried biltong it is better than to eat the soft not so dry biltong....

Enjoy your cravings...

I love Biltong, dont get it often enough living in the UK! When i was in South Africa in May i did avoid it though just to be safe, my step mum is South African and she ate it all the way through her pregnancies! Its probably safer to avoid but bloody hard lol! x
