Black Cohosh....

Yeah you have to swallow the tincture like droplets from a pippette I think its like 2 drops every 2 hours or something and then on the due date you put a number of drops under your tongue (don't quote me on that its just what I've reseacrched) :) ! I will deffinatly be talking to my midwife and herbalist about this :D xX

Thanks, very confusied, its 70% alcohol  and i am t total lol! so not too sure about taking that lol!

Let me know what your herbalist says when you ask, I live fairly ruraly so have no places around like that! and MW is useless! Going to go with trying aromatherpy, can wait for them to come :D

There are various suggested dosages, but you do ingest it. You'd normally put a certain number of drops in a glass of water or fruit juice. The taste is quite strong and not very pleasant which is why you dilute it down. Yes, it is alcoholic - that's how the herb is preserved, but as you only had it a few ml at a time there's not enough alcohol to have an effect. If you don't take alcohol for a religious/cultural reason then it would be best to avoid tinctures and take the herb in a capsule form. It's not as strong and takes longer to be effective but it avoids the alcohol issue. :)

If I was serious about getting labour going I'd make up a labour tincture of both cohoshes plus ginger and take 10-20 drops in a glass of juice every hours for about 5-6 hours. If nothing had happened within that time I'd assume I wasn't ready and try again a few days later. All herbalists will suggest something a little different though, so check with yours to see what they feel is best in your case.

i am 41+4 and was at accupuncture to try and induce labour. she gave me black cohosh last wk and i took it 3 times a day as prescribed but it didnt do anything!!!!every1s different tho...ive tried everything and have come to the conclusion that he just wont come out til he feels like it!!!my SIL and my mum both got 1 session of accupuncture and had their babies that night...Ive had 3 sessions and have completely puzzled the accupuncturist!!!started off with only 8needles and was there again tues and was like a pin cushion but still to no avail!!!!!!!think its just a waiting game!!!

horse-mad, I agree entirely. The best option is always patience - your baby will know when the time is right. :) Good luck!

Wow Snagglepat you have been so helpful!... I think i will defo consider this nearer to my due date!.. I defo will be going to speak to my local herbalist and see if she can make me up a tincture!

Having said that i just read in my other post that Black Cohosh can cause excessive bleeding. If you should take it and end up having to get a C-section, there is a very real risk of major blood loss that could require a blood transfusion.

I have hemorrhaged after both my labours and needed blood transfusions.... Do you think im best to avoid this then?

hi ladies iwas in h&b 2day getting my raspberry leaf tea and had a look at the black cohosh its says on the back ov the bottle not to be takin by pregnant or breastfeeding women so i dont no wot to say? wud u risk taking it?

Just to reiterate if you decide to take either/both of these herbs then it really is best to do so under the care of a qualified herbalist. They would take detailed histories, including any bleeding issues into account when making recommendations. You will find contradicting advice online and from different sources, including me, because we're all coming from different perspectives and basing our advice on the scantest of background information. See a professional, then you know you'll be ok. :)
