I have no idea whether to drink loads or not...at my 12 week scan I got turned away and told to wait again because bladder wasn't full enough (even though I couldn't actually walk it was so full, the stupid lady didn't even check for very long!)

I don't want this to happen again!

When I had mine the letter said half full to drink 3 cups of water x

I've always been told not to bother at the 20 weeks scan as baby is quite big now compared to the 12 week scan, maybe drink 2-3 cups while your there if your worried but I've never had a problem with them seeing baby with drinking normal at 20 weeks :) xx

I got an information leaflet about the 20 week scan when I booked it and it said to drink a pint of water an hour before, just like the dating scan.

With my last pregnancy I thought I'd drunk enough but clearly hadn't because the sonographer was a real bitch about it. She made me feel stupid! She "just about" got the measurements she needed and spent the whole time tutting and muttering to herself.

At my 17 week private scan I'd been told my bladder was TOO full and I had to partly empty it (not easy, lol) so I really didn't expect to need such a full bladder at my 20 week one. I think it's probably because the NHS equipment is less sensitive.. The pictures I got were rubbish.

It's so horrible when sonographers are bitches... It completely ruins it!!!

I was just to drink as normal so if its empty its fine as baby big enough.

I was told to drink normal too but the ultrasound place, but my midwife said to have a full bladder. So not sure what to do either. I think il just drink a little. I couldn't stand having a full full bladder for that whole scan as I hear it's quite long!

I have been told "full bladder". Aren't we all being helpful here!?!

I didn't get told anything either, it think I'll jus go with a full bladder that way it's easier to empty rather than waiting for it to fill up. :)

I was told to have a full bladder for my 20 week ultrasound (I was 19+6) and I have a follow up one today because baby wasn't co-operating and I was told to have a full bladder again.

My imaging center always tells me to drink 64 oz water 1 hr before coming for your ultrasound, regardless of 12, 20, or 36 week scans. I find it especially ridiculous at a 36 wk scan. I'll prob drink half of what they tell me for my 20 wk scan and maybe 1 glass of water for my 36wk position scan.

I was told you didn't need a full bladder and I was even asked to go and empty mine as it was a bit too full although all I had to drink was a small tropicana as I was sat in the waiting room!

I actually had to reschedule my 20 week scan first time around because she said I didn't have enough in my bladder! I was told I need to drink 1L of water before I came in next and if I didn't, I'd have to reschedule again. :/ best of luck! If call and ask just to find out, as it seems everyone has been informed differently :) take care!

I asked about this last week and my tech told me that only really matters in the first tri because it helps push the baby forward to make it easier to scan. But when you're further along, it makes no difference at all because the baby is much bigger. When I was called back at my scan (I was 22 weeks) my tech asked if I wanted to go to the bathroom before we started, and I said yes lol because all that pushing of my belly with the ultrasound thing is already a bit uncomfortable, with a full bladder it would be so much worse. My scan went fine, when baby wasn't cooperating they just had me shift to my side a bit or they'd press my belly a bit to try to get him to move. I think it's weird how we all hear such different things from our techs/doctors.

I was told a 'comfortably full' bladder, and to avoid fizzy drinks. The sonographer struggled to get the measurements, but that was because baby was wedged head-first into my right side with legs stretched all the way across the other side :haha:

I reckon just go for pretty full, then you can empty it if needed, rather than having to sit and drink a load before they'll try again.

Wow, 64 oz is a lot of water. My hospital says 40 oz. I drank it for my 12 week ultrasound, but not for my 20 week one. I can't hold 40 oz in my bladder for very long, I definitely couldn't do 64.

In my letter is states 'a moderately full bladder'

At my 8 week it was bursting. The sonographer commented on how full it was and showed me how full it was! As soon as she finishing I ran out the door to the loo as I really was uncomfy. (They just did external scan, I wonder if the full bladder helped to allow this)

At my 12 week it was not bursting but full ish. The sonographer didn't comment about it at all so assume it was neither too empty or too full.

My leaflet said only need full bladder up until 15 weeks gestation? I think I drank before my 20 week scan though as I always like to sip on water or juice in the car so I doubt my bladder was empty. Just not uncomfortable full like it was for my early scans.

I was told the pint of water an hour before thing. No way was I going to do that, I knew I wouldn't get to the appointment on time. It was nearly an hour late, and the sonographer didn't mention it, so I'm glad I didn't bother.

I would just try and go an hour before then have a couple of small drinks, so you don't have to sit around with a full bladder.
