BLW - Baby led weaning support thread

I think one of the main essences of BLW is they eat what they want so if you put the half a roast potato and 2 bits of asparagus on her tray and they get eaten, put some more on and let her carry on.

I think as time goes on you will start to learn how much she will usually eat and judge well what to put in front of her.

PS minkymoo, Ava-Mae is catching up with Niamh (further to my post a couple of weeks ago about predicting having a gummy 5 year old who just lays on the floor...) We now have 2 teeth, well, one little razor poking through the gum and one juuuuuuust about to make it's appearance (I didn't even know she was teething...bad mummy!) and she has now mastered rolling back to front and I now spend most of the day turning her back over! Just the sitting to master and we will be set...

We slooooooowly started to try BLW a week before 6 months but LO is not very good at sitting up so she spent most of the time with her face about an inch from the tray. So we are going to wait a bit I think. Hoping it works out once the sitting is better as I really want to BLW and it not going so well the first time we tried made me feel a bit down and stirred up feelings about failing at BF...stoooopid I know!

Minkymoo did niamh actually eat the food?! That's great! When we have given Ava-Mae little bits, not of it gets swallowed. I even tried to test her swallowing ability by spooning a bit of weeabix in her mouth and she poked it straight back out!

Yay!! I saw a post of yours the other day commenting on her rolling, well done Ava-Mae. Niamh still only does front to back, and that was only a week ago.

I kept passing Niamh's teething off as everything else too so was very surprised to find a tooth. Both the bottom 2 are mostly out now and it looks so cute. No sign of any others just yet.

Soon we'll be pulling our hair out because they've put toast in the dvd player and pulling pot plants over....

What do we consider a meal portion with blw at 6 months? i.e. half a roast potato plus 2 sticks of asparagus or two toast soldiers and a chunk of banana etc?

I am really clueless.

no idea but holly just ate 2 massive strawberries , 1 chunk of pineapple , a bit of a cucumber stick a slice of tomato and attempted to gum a breadstick

I let Maria eat as much as she wants, if she finishes what I gave her then I give some more.

Now she has a tooth she is doing so much better, she had some chunks of pork today and they almost all got eaten (4 chunks, she demolished the first two, chewed on the next two and then decided it would be more fun to put them on the floor and stare at them)
BLW really seems to suit her!

Thanks Eve - i'm laying off citrus fruits for a little while as Noo has eczema and they tend to flare it up.

Natsku - all these teeth popping up lately! How are your boobs getting on with it?

After a few painful bites she hasn't bit me anymore. Maybe because everytime she did I said ouch loudly and unlatched her.

Although most people ask can I join, hang around for a while, then realise how boring we really are and that's the last we see of them!! :haha:

Hey Moo! You're BLWing! Yay!

Sofia barely swallows her milk so Niamh sounds like she's doing well. We did actually eat half a baby sweetcorn today without gagging! Other stuff is making its way in (from the nappies) but she generally chews and exits the way it came in! lol!

I offered Joel some peanut butter on a rusk biscuit today (bit naughty for BLW but been given so many rusks and plum purees) after he wasn't loving his puree'd sweetcorn on toast, is he too young to be giving peanut better to?

Well, kinda. I'm still going to offer yoghurts and the odd puree of 'hard foods'.

I'm just going with very fleshy foods like steamed courgette, potato and parsnip etc for now, it's easier for her to suck, no way am I brave enough for pepper strips etc (unless roasted). She's had 4 toast soldiers too and I found some amazing sized courgette chunks in today's pants!!

How many meals is Fi on now?

I think it's 6 months? I have given Noo some buttered toast a week 'early'.

Trying out the doidy!

Can they have strawberries? The seeds are ok etc? Sorry, I am soooo naive....

Yeah , they're fine. Well the BLW cookbook says they are haha :) they can be given whole as they are squishy but I tend to cut them in half! Strawberries are luke's favourite up to now! x

when i had my 1st child i was told to leave them until 12 months if there was a history of allergies other than that you are good to go i think . holly has had loads they are the 1st thing she grabs off the tray chomps them up dribbles the juice makes a good old mess with them . the only things ive been told ti avoid is honey before 1 , shellfish and nuts . if there is allergies to certain foods in the family then you should prob think about leaving them till bit older or ask a hv/ dr etc

Thanks girls. I gave her half of one earlier, she pulled a face initially but then just kept shoving it in and sucking. I am actually allergic to strawberries but only in the sense that my hands (bizarrely) go blotchy. Perhaps I should lay off them for a while then.....

She also had a chunk of banana but she gagged quite badly with it, anyone else had similar with banana?

h only gagged on banana when she tried to shove a whole banana down her throat lol .

today she tried pasta and tuna, she got peed off at not being able to chew the pasta but played with it anyway !
