Alix Craigie (pronounced Ah-lix)

Would add a middle name depending on boy or girl...

I posted this on another forum and was attacked... Apparently I am butchering a traditional name?

I'm so glad I found this forum first. I've heard from a lot of girlies on here how rude people are on other forums. I like Alex for a boy or a girl, and don't think Alix is too far removed from the original spelling. It's still pretty clear how it would be pronounced xx

I really like Alex, and although Alix looks a little harsh (I'm a fan of traditional spellings) I would still guess how to spell it and it wouldn't be very hard t explain how to spell it, he'd just have to say "Alex with an 'I'". How do you pronounce Craigie? Is it just Craig with an ee sound on the end?

Alix I would take as a variation of Alex which is a unisex nickname on more gender oriented names like Alexander, Alexandria and Alexis so Alex isnt either male of female but it does seem to nicknamy for my tastes

I dont understand changing spellings it would just drive the child mad each time he receives a card etc with his name spelt wrong. If pronounced the same im not sure I see the value in changing

I went to school with an Alyx, and she hated that she had to keep correcting the spelling of her name. I've never heard the name Craigie before - is it your surname?

I think Alex is a great name. Not a fan of the spelling at all.

Alix and Alex are 2 different names, and Alix is not a variation of Alex.
It's actually a variation of Alice, and was originally a girl's name. Although it is now unisex...
Judging by all the comments, it seems like it is an unusual name in english speaking countries... But being French, I love the name, and wouldn't confuse it for Alex at all. And I don't think people would consider that you butchered the 'normal' spelling (because again, Alix and Alex are 2 different names...). But that's just in France though, I can't speak for where you are... I think it's a beautiful name. I might prefer it for a girl, but would suit both.

To me it looks like a "unique" spelling of Alex which I'm really not a fan of. Alix looks very feminine to me as well so if you were really set on it I would use it for a girl, and Alex for a boy.

I think thats just the way most people will see it now esspecially since changing spellings is common now

to be honest id pronounce both differently:

Alix = Ah-Licks
Alex = Ah-Leks

but since she asked about male or female and I have no link to the name Alix I gave the closest answer I could which will be where many people mind goes when looking to fill the blank

I like it!! No one likes my girl name either so don't feel bad :haha: but I think I am still going with it! I like different!

You're absolutely right, if it's a name that's really uncommon in the UK then people will probably mistake it for a weird version of Alex. Funny how differently a name can be perceived depending on the country!

I'm uk and it looks like a 'uneek' way of spelling Alex to me!
If your in a country where it's a common name then I'm sure it looks different!
However if I had to pick, I'd use it as a girls name.

I named my daughter Alex (my kids all have unisex names, so I'm keeping that trend). A lot of times, people ask me what it's short for, and I just look at them like they're stupid and tell them, "Alex?" Haha. I did keep the traditional spelling, but I have met a few women named Alix since. I love the name, and I call her Allie, and she calls herself Al-Al. Haha

Lol yea Craig with an ee on the end. It's my fiancees last name, I was going to do Craigie-Brochu (Brochu being my maiden name) but it's just too harsh and clashy...

I appreciate the input from everyone and I get the people saying that people will misspell the name but it happens with mine all the time (Vicky not short for anything) and I just correct them and move on...

I've had
Viki
Vicki
Vickie
Veekee
..... Never ends...
