Couple of things...

Do I need to put it in my hospital bag?
Is a manual really that bad... Having read some reviews...?

For those who've had bubs... What did you do?

I have never taken mine to the hospital. I live in the US though and they have always provided a pump for me if I needed one. Mine is not manual but I can imagine it could get pretty tiring but I don't make a very good milk supply so it takes me about 20 minutes with an expensive medella to get 2 ounces. Hope this helps.

I used to get heaps from a manual it just tired my hand lol!

I didn't take it to hospital - I expect if there is need o express colostrum you'd be better with their hospital grade pumps anyway, or they will teach you to hand express xxx

I know my hospital has pumps there to use if needed. I think it depends on the hospital.

I didn't take mine but only got it so I could express bottles once he got to be old enough to avoid nipple confusion (in retrospec I'm not sure there is such a thing but..)

I only ever had an electric pump - tommee tippee one that I got half price from mothercare or boots when it was on offer - so can't help with that bit I'm afraid.

Your milk doesn't come in for a couple of days so, unless you are in for a while, you won't need one in hospital. If you are in longer then OH could bring it in.

I liked my Medela swing because I could attach it and it would work with no further effort from me

There is no need for one in a hospital.

Your milk won't come in until after you leave the hospital (3-5 days).

What are your plans? Are you looking to do this exclusively or just for occasions? Exclusive pumping should be done with a hospital grade double pump (and you can get this from the hospital). Occasional use, a manual is fine, but you won't need that right away.

If this is an "emergency" backup for some reason you cannot breastfeed, then they will assist you with hand expressing colostrum which is then given to baby through a syringe. You can't really pump the colostrum into a proper bottle b/c the amounts of colostrum is so tiny, it will just end up in the tubing anyways.

Good luck :)

Thank you ladies that's helped clear up my confusion a lot :)

Aliss - after bub is home I'll only be (if goes to plan) expressing occasionally so OH can help with the odd feed here and there

A manual should be fine then :) An electric is better I admit, but if it's occasional, manual is fine. Hand expressing might work fine for you too, I have friends who found it just as useful

How did you find it? Seems there's a new model just been released, and the old one gets very bad reviews.

I got my breast pump at the weekend, I have had the manual Avent one...

Had a play with it when I got home and it seems ok ... felt weird though! :haha:

:hugs:

I am pumping with a manual tomee tippee one, getting between 5oz and 8oz per time so I do not think they are rubbish. However, it takes upto an hour to get 8oz. Thinking of investing in an electric one, just to save time really.

Ah this is the one I bought coz all my bottles are tommee tippee I just assumed that I would need one that fitted them
