Cake Making & Baking Group

Here are my Saturday cuppies. I had to make both lots at very short notice hence not having the right green for the football ones, and having to hand make the footballs. Both clients were very happy though and it's resulted in another 4 definate orders. Oh happy day!!!

how you doing these flowers? are you rolling your own icing and using a cutter?
please tell me your secret.. where can I get great big flower cutters that have results like this?

Tsia it's so easy! It's a daisy/gerbera plunger cutter, and the yellow middle is just cut using the end of a nozzle as it's the perfect size.

I coloured my fondant, mixed in some gum tragacanth and then dusted it with edible pink glitter dust. I pricked the centre with cocktail sticks. Soooo easy x

Cant imagine a plunger cutter that big! all mine are small! tiny compared to that! lol

whats gum tragacanth?
keep hearing people mention this

It's a powder that you just kneed into the fondant and it makes it more elastic. Most cake shops will sell it or you can get it online

Yummy cakes everyone!

Whoopy-pop your piping is so neat! x

Tsia I forgot to say that the cutter I used is the medium one in a pack of 3, so there's an even bigger one that I'll use on cakes.

GF that's good going for so early!!!

Just come across this thread and now my diet has gone to poo! lol These cakes are amazing, you ladies are soooo talented :cloud9::cloud9:
I was wondering, does anybody make cakes to order for a reasonable price? I know it's a way off but in case my gran can't do it I was looking at a back-up plan for my LO's first birthday. I'd like a Mr Man cake, preferably Mr Tickle but I know it could be quite hard. I thought about a medium sized cake of Mr Tickle and then about 12 cupcakes with different Mr Men characters on them. Is this a bit ambitious, would I have to go to a specialist place? My gran is very good at making cakes and I know she'd love to do it but I'm worried this 'specification' may be a bit too much for her :? xx

Whens your LO 1? Feb?? Jac I *think* said she was going to start delivering but wasnt sure when...

And theres the rest of the lovely ladies who come here are excellent cake makers but dunno if they deliver etc..

Would you not want to have a stab at it yourself? You've got a few months to practice, and I'm sure we'll all help with tips and advice! :)

xx

Yeah, I'm gonna have a go, but I'm certain it'll all go wrong; honestly I can't cook/bake/create (even) to save my life  Thank you for the vote of confidence though :hugs: My husband would laugh himself dizzy if I told him I was even gonna attempt it, especially as I can "make a salad inedible" 8-[ xx

Aw hun :hugs: I cant cook - honestly! But I started small with a victoria sponge, then a devils food cake and then I wanted to have a go at covering in fondant. Its really about patience and confidence which will both go hand in hand!

I find round cakes are easier to cover than square imo. You could do an 8" round sponge, cover it in orange icing and for the arms use rolled icing like you would if it was plastercine ??

Something maybe like this?

And if you want to actually see someone covering the cakes etc I always go on youtube for the vids Xx

That is fantastic, thank you  If i can use that as a guideline, i've got 6 months to practice lol. Thanks :flower: xx

right then girlies, am making Jensons christening cake this weekend and just got few questions again!

-Whats the best buttercream to do the crumb coating?
-Do you think I'll be ok doing 3 8" round cakes and stacking them? (they are quite shallow)
-Last time I did a birthday cake the buttercream and jam made the sponge very very soggy by the next day? How can i stop this and have any of you got the perfect recipr for the cake itself? I used the W.I recipe for victoria sponge last time but it wasnt that light!

Thanks once again for helping out a novice!

Cheers

I use 6oz butter, SR flour & Caster Sugar - 1tsp baking powder and 3 eggs for a victoria sponge - that normally does 2 8" shallow sandwich tins.

Staking them should be fine hun, works well with jam in between layers.

And for butter cream, I use 100g butter and 240-250g icing sugar. Once you've put buttercream on your cake let it set in the fridge before covering, I find it helps a little better :)

If you're going to shape your cake you're best of doing a madiera sponge as its less crums but I find victoria nicer to taste!

Make sure your jam isnt watery, mix it before putting in your layers to stop it being 'wet'

Hope this helps! The others probably do it different but its an option for you x
