Cake Making & Baking Group

hehehe!

I couldn't get the rose ones to work last time so gave up! Strangely did this time!

Gawd Jo!! , what are you up to with 3 days worth of baking and decorating?!

I have about 40 halloween cupcakes to make for Saturday night...........
Then i came up with the bright/stupid idea that I would give our trick or treaters cupcakes and cookies when they come!!

Soooo today I need to get some biscuits made, and a pile of cupcakes.......... AND PRAY that the cupcake pod carriers show up in time!!!
I wish I could say I was up to something fantastic, but nope I'm just crap!!
I baked all my stuff on Wednesday
3 cakes to layer up-Lemon
24 small buns vanilla and Choc
40ish Cupcakes Vanilla and choc

I decorated most of the cupcakes yesterday and covered the cake

Today it was finishing decorating the cake but I have been really stuck for ideas with it.

I've just not been organised this week, I met myself coming backwards!!

the 24 small buns were also my bright spark idea for trick or treaters, just need to shiny ice them along with the rest of cupcakes for a friends birthday.

Heres todays cake:

Oh that is just fantastic!!!

OMG at all the fab cakes just recently! You are all sooooo clever!!!

I got my delivery from cakecraft t'other day so been busy with my cupcake nozzle, practising and practising. Not happy still but getting better each time. My best so far were some halloween themed cupcakes I made for a get together with friends, they all loved them, said they looked shop bought!:happydance: Maybe they just didn't wanna hurt my feelings? :haha: Will post piccies when I get them off my phone.

Ethans birthday is creeping up FAST, I'm all prepared to start his cake after the weekend, I have a few questions.....

If I make stars out of fondant and stick them onto wires at the weekend, will they still be ok by his birthday on Wednesday? Won't dry out and crack?

And......how do you cover a cake board with roll out icing??

Oh AND...(sorry,I want this cake to look fab!!!!)...how do you 'clean' the icing once it's on the cake? I'ce tried using abit of water dabbed on a little brush before and it made it look all shiney where I'd done it. Looked awful!

Thats it for now I think...please,I'd be very grateful for any help with this xxxx
I think I can answer a couple of the questions for you.
The wired stars should be ok, they need time to dry out anyway, i've made flowers and butterflies, never on wires but they still haven't cracked after a couple of weeks ( I bulk make and store them) I always use gum Trag in it though.

For the board I just roll the icing directly onto it and then just trim it.

I have a question too though how come I can never cover my cake with out creases at one side? It is driving me potty, it always looks a bit lumpy as well to me :hissy:

Just put the lump of fondant in middle of cake board and then roll out and trim? Do I need to put icing sugar on the board to make rolling easier or just roll it out as it is so it actually sticks to the board?
Can't help with your question though JO sorry! xx

Do I definately need to buy gum trag? What difference will it make if I don't add it to the icing?

Cass that memo cake is awesome!! My Daisy would love it!!!

Ummmmm I roll out my icing as if for cake, dampen the board with water then place on the board, use a smoother then trim,

For wired things, best to cut the shapes you need let them dry for a day or so and then stick them to the wires, just less chance of them becoming mishaped and wonky!

For cleaning up the cake? Best thing first of all is to try and use as little icing sugar as possible on the top of your Icing (plenty underneath) Then just before I transfer it to the cake I rub the palm of my hand over it, that gets rid of loose icing sugar!
If you still have some after that you can use a dusting brush, can buy them but a soft makeup brush is exactly the same and cheaper!!

Folds in the icing is just On e you place your icing on the cake, smooth over the top, then keep lifting and gently smoothing the sides upwards with your hands, j
Keep lifting till all the creases are away!

Sorry for any dodgy spelling or grammar, I'm on my IPhone!!!

Ahhhh smoothing UP I always smooth it down ward, just automatic I suppose, I will try that next time thank you.
You should do some Youtube Vids Andrea :)

More QUESTIONS....

How long can a cake board be covered in roll out icing for and be ok, not dry out/crack??

How do I stick my stars onto wires? Do I do them quite thick and slide the wire through the middle or do I stick the wire onto the back of the star somehow?

Thanksyooooouuuu xxx

You can cover your board for weeks before if you needto! Just leave it to dry out for a day then cover with cling film.

Make your stars a bit thicker than usual let them dry, then stick your wires on with a bit of fondant and water ( sort of like blu tack! )

Thankyou :flower:

Do I need to put anything on the cake board before I cover it in icing?

Tea Cup Cake

The handle made the cup tilt so I had to wedge sugarpaste under it after I took this! :dohh:

Love the tea cup cake!!

Right..Ive iced my cakeboard and made the cake which will be mickey's face,it's cooling as I type, smells delishhhh!! I made my fondant stars and a number1 yesterday, should they go totally hard before I can stick them onto wires?? Do they need to be left uncovered to dry properly? I put them into an empty chocolates tin overnight with tinfoil on the top to stop anything from touching them but do they need to be uncovered?

Also..I had a quick try with the wires..thought I'd try pushing one end through the middle of a star, it looked fab..I stuck it into the cake and it drooped straight away!..How do I make it hold up? do they hold up better when the wire is glued on the back instead?

last time i stuck a wire through middle of stars i lef tthem to dry out and did them quite thick maybe that would work?

Ladies, I'm so sorry if mentioned elsewhere.
Anyone know where I can get single cupcake boxes/pods at reasonable prices? I'm doing a few cupcakes for family and need someway of them transporting them home.
Thanks :)

ladies can i be nosey at how much you would charge for a 12'' chocolate cake with iced say for example hello kitty theme?

I'm crap at pricing - infact I just make it up  I think I charged a 12" iced chocolate sponge for £50...

I'm rubbish with pricing too I haven't actually sold a cake yet, I'd be embarrassed with mine to charge LOL
