Ok so here's the deal - I have a major phobia when it comes to needles  and I am due to start IVF in the next 3 weeks approx.
I know I will be prescribed Gonal F and thanks to the miracle of Google I have started to go mad...... I spend my days googling images of the GonalF needles and this afternoon I found a lovely video showing exactly how to inject.

I would really like someone to tell me it's ok, my family have tried but I do not count their view on this as 1 - it's not happening to them and 2 - they have no issues whatsoever when it comes to needles, they are actually all lining up to say they will inject me instead (Thanks )

I realising I am being completely irrational and stupid but I don't actually think I will be able to do it when it comes to it. DH tells me to look at the bigger picture and the end result and I do and that keeps the PMA up for about 10 minutes!!

Thanks for listening and appreciate and advice you have!!

Hey chick, it's not irrational to have a fear of needles! :hugs:

I haven't started my shots of Gonal F yet but the actual injection looks just like an insulin needle, which are teeny weeny. I'm sure at the point you're at, you've had quite a few Blood tests? The needles they use for the bloodtests are much more unpleasant than an insulin-like needle Gonal F needle. So just imagine the pain isn't going to be as bad as that! Can your husband do the injecting for you so you can look away whilst he does it?

I'm sure you'll get more replies from ladies that actually have done the shots that will reassure you further!

:hugs:

Yeah i've had plenty of blood test but always look away before the nurse even has the needle out of the packaging.

I am sure DH will do it, just hope I don't make him too nervous though. Oh dear - anyone wanna a laugh come to my house in a few weeks and watch the drama unfold

Hi
I was really worried about having to do the injections myself, DH said he would do it but at the back of my mind I knew that he wouldn't be able to. I found it a lot easier then I thought it would & it didn't hurt at all (first time I've been thankful for fat thighs!) and this is from someone who fainted at a blood test.
I'm sure you will be fine and good luck

You honestly don't feel the needle going in at all. It just stings a bit as the liquid dispenses. I have a needle phobia. I go to pieces for blood tests but I was able to do the first few injections myself. Had a mental block last night and couldn't do my fourth injection though (had been a long day) and hubby had to step in and do it and he did a sterling job (thanks hun). How about getting your DH to do it for you?

Is that you're jack russell by the way? He's gorgeous.

Thanks Myboo - DH will step in I am sure, Just want to try and do it myself as a personal victory!

Yeah he's my Jack Russell - He's called Oscar and he's my baby. He'll be 2 next month - they grow up so fast

Your Jack is lovely. I really like the bandana as well, I want one for Oscar but DH won't let me. If I could I would dress him up all day.

Hey

I also have a huge fear of needles and should be starting my IVF cycle before the end of this year - i tend to hyperventilate and get sick whenver anyone comes near me!

I am considering trying accupuncture before my cycle so that i can get my head around it and also the fact that friends who have had IVF swear by the help of accupuncture (as does my FS!).

The girls on here that have had or are having IVF said that the needles don't hurt and you barely feel a think - if you pinch your tummy then inject you won't feel it - i know they say not to inject in the thigh due to bruising and muscle??

:hugs:

The nurse at the clinic I went to advised thigh, I was orginally going to do tummy. I had no bruising but I think this is because I could pinch more than an inch on my thigh not that I would have a problem with the belly either. a lot easier then you imagine.

My hospital had a practice session for the needles before we started which was quite helpful to get over the fear. All you had to do was get an empty syringe and put it in, obviously nothing to actually inject. That was the worst one, I'd say.

I didn't find them easy but if you can get your PMA to last 10 mins a day that should suffice for the injections. :hugs:

Also I can highly recommend an ice pack for the stinging.
