Calpol- What do you think?

I have posted another thread about teething and was asking about Calpol there. Got me thinking and wondering about your opinions?

-What do you think about Calpol and when do you use it?
-How do you decide when to give it?
-What do you give it for?
-Does anyone else wonder like me if it is the right thing to go (give it) or do you not worry about it?
- Do you use an alternative?

We have had to give Emma Calpol just the once but I am curious and as ever, confused and questioning my decisions.

Because of my own health issues, I have to try to avoid taking too many painkillers/ tablets. However I am not anti- pain relief, it is just my own situation.

All opinions welcome!

What do you think about Calpol and when do you use it?

I give Harry Calpol whenever I think he is in pain (e.g. teething/body aches if he's unwell) and if he has a temperature. I don't see any problem with giving Calpol - I follow the guidelines and only give Harry the amount he is allowed.

How do you decide when to give it?

If Harry is unwell and is crying a lot - he's not a crying-type baby, so i usually know. I also give it to him if he's teething and i've tried the teething gels/powders/teething rings etc and he's still crying or seems in pain. Also if Harry has a temperature. I also gave him some before I took him for his jabs and used it after the first set of jabs as he really struggled that time.

What do you give it for?

I do give it some consideration before giving it to him. I don't just give him medicine without a thought. And I will try other things before hand... but I don't have any problems with medicines.

I'll try things like teething gels etc for his teething pain.... comforting him/trying to get him to sleep etc... but if he's poorly, I generally just give it to him because I know what it's like.

she's only "needed" it once or twice. I will give for high temp reallly. haven't got to bad teething yet, but any time i think she's in pain, or hurting kinda really. I don't worry as such giving it, but find out if she def needs it first.

I only have calpol/doctor prescribed calpol in atm, but would use nurofen / calcold / calcough / cough medicines depending what was up, as i wouldn't like to be left to fight it alone x

I agree, my answer would look pretty much like this too.

Only thing to add is, I always give the lowest dose possible. I only ever give 2.5ml, where for AJ's age I can give 5ml per dose.

ditto, dex has just come down with a cold so i have just given him some.

I did wonder when I should give it to him, but the Dr assured me it was very safe_ I was using it asa last resort and he told me off and said not to wait that long- I wouldnt wait that long to take paracetamol for me. And it'sobvious when he needsit cos he's suc a happy baba normally...

My LO has calpol 4x a day. Every day. Its prescribed.

-How do you decide when to give it?
I don't. We give it every six hours.

-What do you give it for?
Headaches and neck pain. My LO has Hydrocephalus (connected to her Spina Bifida) which gives her very severe headaches and a sore neck if she doesn't have pain relief.

I don't have any other choice. Either give her the Calpol or have a screaming toddler 24/7.

If the Calpol doesn't stop her crying we give her calprofen (also prescribed).

She's been having calpol since April. When she gets older she'll have stronger pain relief.
