Am looking into hypnobirthing has anyone got any recommendations ? The free apps make you pay to get any of the tracks and don't want to waste money as there are so many

Anyone done classes ? Are they worth the money ?

I have the Marie mongan book
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hypnobirthing-Breakthrough-Easier-Comfortable-Childbirth/dp/0285637711
And I downloaded the birthing affirmations and rainbow relaxation for free, I googled them last pregnancy so don't have a link I'm afraid.
I never did a class and found all this sufficient.

I ended up buying a cd online but the best thing that helped me was the ina may guide to childbirth book it was incredible and has lots of coping techniques that were the main things I used in my labor.

A vote for Natal Hypnotherapy here. I used the 4cd programme, the book and the 2 1day courses. Was it all worth the money? Yes! I had a completely pain free and drug free labour and home birth and recommend the series to anyone who will listen. I would recommend that you choose and start which ever programme you choose as soon as possible though. It really is practice, practice, practice with hypnotherapy (or more like, sleep, sleep, sleep if you're like most people who listen to the Natal Hypnotherapy cds!) so the more you listen to the tracks, the more it's likely to sink in to your subconscious mind.

If you google Natal Hypnotherapy, their website is really easy to find.

If you have any questions about the Natal Hypnotherapy, feel free to shout me :)

im using the maggie howell 4 cd natal hypnotherapy too only started using them this week so far really enjoing them

I've been offered a 6 hour course for £100 at home run by a mw at the hospital where I will have the baby, - hmmm what to do

Ask her what programme it is based on (There is a move by the NHS to try Natal Hypnotherapy out, despite the fact the NICE guidelines state that hypnotherapy shouldn't be offered. I think they're starting to see the benefits of using it). Pricewise it's not wildly far out from the cost of one of the Natal Hypnotherapy day courses. The other major thing to find out is what they are going to cover in the 6 hours. It won't be 6 hours of you in hypnosis, that's for sure! What are they going to give you in terms of resources to take away from it? Can you buy/borrow cd's to continue the things covered in the course. That sort of thing. Is that of any help?

im trying out a free relaxation class tomorrow run by a natal hypnotherapist will let you know how I get on its at my local sure start childrens centre

I read the mongan book and I felt it was too vague for me, I ordered hypnobabies and started it last weekend and I like it so far! A lot more structured!

Why do they say it shouldn't be used ? She has said that she will tailor it to what I want so breathing, relaxation, get rid of the aniexty

It's because they won't "waste" resources on what they believe to be "ineffective" ;) There is a whole history as to why hypnosis isn't used in a medical setting which goes back to the witch hunts. It's not that they won't use it because there is any negative side effect or anything like that, it's just historical politics.

I did classes at my hospital and they were fantastic; 4 sessions in 4 weeks. We use The Hypnobirthing Book by Katharine Graves along with a mediation CD called River Dawn (piano meditations). My midwife has also recorded some relaxation scripts onto CD which are played over the same music but you could easily do that (or get your partner to) and record them on your phone as the scripts are in the book IIRC. I honestly can't speak highly enough of them, I feel calm and confident with only 6 weeks until my EDD. I liked the classes because you can ask questions but I'm sure you'd get a similar effect from the book if you want to save money. We also had a hypnobirth mum and dad come to speak to us which was useful - it made us see that it works in 'real life'!

You're right though, it's definitely becoming more mainstream. It's really not as 'hippy' as the name suggests. The key philosophy is that your body has managed to grow your baby for nine months without any intervention from you. It already knows how to birth your baby, you just need to practice learning how to relax so you can go with the flow, rather than tensing up and fighting it. My course also included info on the physiology of labour (eg what the contractions are actually doing/achieving, how and why your hormones are released etc). My DH went to the first class a sceptic and came out raving about it! Even if it just keeps me calm in the run up to the birth, I'll be pleased. Most other pregnant ladies that I know are panicking.

I'm feeling a bit sad, told my h about it and he raised his eyes and really doesn't get it I've told him I don't expect him to sit through the whole course but an hour or so he understands and can support me. He agreed but very reluctantly and so as not to cause an argument/upset me. Men just don't get it :-(

He will probably feel differently after the course - it's just a case of dragging him there in the first place! It's his job to support you and one of the great things about hypnobirthing is that it gives the partner loads of 'jobs' to do so they end up being an integral part of the birth rather than sitting around like a spare part. My DH has strict instructions to make sure I'm fed, watered, massaged and have been for a wee at regular intervals. Apparently labour can slow down or stop if you run out of energy, and a full bladder can prevent the baby exiting. It's in his (and more importantly, yours and baby's) interests to learn how he can make things go as smoothly as possible.

I feel like I'm getting on my soapbox a bit and really don't mean it like that. Obviously I haven't had chance to put it all into practice yet but am so pleased I chose this course and wouldn't want anyone who wants to do it to miss out!

My oh didnt really get it, until we did the course. As the pp says, there are lots of jobs he can do, and it can really help him to take ownership of the experience. I think there is also a huge amount of it being "hippy rubbish that doesnt work" to men. Let me assure you, it does! Being calm and relaxed in labour is the key to a smooth experience. Try doing a you tube search for Natal Hypnotherapy birth and show him? This one is fairly good:

I was like the lady in the second one in the early stages - I'd go quiet during a ctx and then carry on talking afterwards. In the later stages, I just slept!!

He'll come round - we'll help you!!

ETA: have i managed to embed the videos sideways on for everyone else too?! If I have, I'll redo them tomorrow on the computer rather than on the tablet!!

Just want to show women that there is another way - you don't have to be in so much pain that you're begging for relief! :)

How did the relaxation session go, purplesparkle? I'd be interested to know :flower:
