hey mummies my lo is just over 4 weeks and he was given carobel for reflux last fri, since he has been on the carobel he has had really bad diarrhoea :sad1: so bad that i am throwing clothes out cuz its up his back and down his wee legs!! he has also been prescribed Rantitidine (Zantac). it all seems to help but the diarrhoea is about 3\4 nappys a day! has anyone else lo had this while on carobel??

thank you

I only find the carobel bungs LO up. Any feed more than half a scoop per feed and she gets constipated. I am not saying it isnt the carobel-all babies are different.

Did LO start the carobel at the same time as the ranitadine? Could it be the ranitadine?

Sorry! I am not much help!

my lo is the same. hes on ranitidine and carobel to and he as 4 extremely runny nappies a day, all way down his legs and up his belly. dont know which one his causing it as i started them together. i have read this can happen with the ranitidine thou.
im not really concerned by it thou as he as no distress at all with it and before when he was on gaviscon he was constipated and was in alot of discomfort with it x

Carobel didn't change my LO's poo at all. Just stayed the same. Sounds like its the ranitidine hun xx

we have got it all sorted now :happydance: our wee man is now a happy wee baby no more sickness and normal poo. the doc has put him on sma staydown and he is still taking the Rantitidine! he is like a different baby! if anyone who has a wee baby with reflux i would highly recommend sma staydown!! you can also get it on prescription so you save a few pennies

also helping is i bought the mams bottles starter pack and my wee man just loves them..... xxx

happy baby makes a happy mummy xxxxx

Hi
I have a 9 week old who has silent reflux and an intolerance to formula. It is a long saga but basically we started off with gaviscon which didnt agree with him at all. We were then prescribed sma stay down which helped the reflux but made him very windy and constipated so there was alot of crying rlating to this. We were then prescribed ranitidine three times a day. symptoms didnt improve at all so we got referred to a pead. He said that ranitidine should not be used with sma staydown as it combats what the formula does in the stomach. He prescribed lactose free formula and carobel and rantidine. After 24hours he had so many runny nappies I lost count. I stopped the carobel for 24 hours and teh runny nappies stopped but the reflux was worse. Went back to paed who swaid carobel can cause loose watery stools but not the diarrhoea I was describing so he changed the formula to nutrimigena and carobel. Again afer 24 hours the runny nappies started again. I am reluctant to keep using teh carobel if this is going to continue as baby as 5lb 3oz when born and is now 9lb 6oz but needs to be putting on weight each week not losing it. But he also needs a thickener to help with the acid - has anyone any alternatives to carobel? Sorry for the long saga!

Bump.

Did any of you girls find an alternative to Carobel?

DS needs the Carobel, it almost fully controls the reflux and he is much more settled and sleep 20 times better but like everyone else we are getting the loose watery nappies 3-4times a day anf he is up crying from 4am-7am with awful bottom end wind. Its def Carobel as nappies and wind are normal without.

Cant use Gaviscon as it doesnt help the reflux and gives him constipation!

He cant tolerate unthickened milk though, and screams without thr Carobel and constantly brings up watery mouthfuls of acid and chokes and gulpts through his feed only managing 1oz whereas with Carobel we get 3-4oz xxx

Aptamil, Cow and gate and SMA all do an anti-reflux milk now. You can buy it on the shelf.

xx
