Hi ladies...my ds is 8 weeks old tomorrow and had silent reflux...we have been prescribed infant gavsion and carobel. The gaviscon instructions say not to use with a milk thickener so I hadn't been using the carobel...however he kept being sick so this week I've swopped and am given him only the carobel. But now he seems to be in pain without the gaviscon! Is there anything (over the counter or on prescription) that we could try which can be used together to help with the heartburn and the vomiting?

Sorry hun I've no idea but I'd check with my HV or GP to see what they recommend x

If your LO is being sick then it's not silent reflux, SR is reflux without the sick. Gaviscon is a very mild antacid as well as a thickener, which is why it might be helping more than the carobel. I wouldn't use them together, the milk would end up far too thick. If the carobel is helping with the sick, then it sounds like your LO might need an acid inhibitor such as ranitidine. Ranitidine helps with the pain, and can be used in conjunction with carobel. You'd need to go to your GP to get a prescription for it though. The other thing you could try is an anti reflux formula such as SMA staydown, which is formulated to thicken in the stomach and not be vomitted up. That would only help with the sick though, and not the pain. I hope you find a combination that works soon x x

Thanks ladies...my hv recommended mixing them...doctor asked me what the instructions said (?!) so she wasn't any use and I've had one chemist say it's fine to mix them but two saying no...gut instinct is telling me not to which is why we haven't to date...

It initially started as silent reflux as ds wasn't being sick but it seems like the gavison is actually making him bring the sick up?

I'll speak to doctor tomorrow about the rantidine...thanks for the advice!!

Holly was put on gaviscon first for her SR, but it made her loads worse. I took her off it and she was put on ranitidine which was miles better. x x
