Castor oil

My cousin took it, she has diarrhea for hours and then had the baby within 4 hours after that lol. I took it 2 or 3 times with my first (under dr's suggestion) and it didnt work, I took it about 2 weeks before I was due and I still went 9 days over and yes, its disgusting, I can still taste it lol, I mixed it with orange juice. I wouldnt try it again simply because it didnt work for me, but when i took it it was the dr who told me to do it

Just thought I'd pop in, and say that I have used with my first two pregnancies and with the advice of my doctor, I took it in small doses, and drank plenty of water to stay hydrated, it worked with both my pregnancies, but I was already dilated and effaced, ie my body was ready to go into labor...neither me or my babies had any complications, however, it does taste worse than anything I've ever tasted...many women can't stomach it, and will throw up immediately...castor oil would not be my first choice, and I probably wouldn't use it unless it was a last resort and advised by your doctor or midwife. In my opinion, the effect you're looking for can be just as easily obtained by eating foods high in fiber, that will give you the same results, which is looser bowels, which stimulate contractions, but doesn't taste bad, and is prob a lot better in the long run.

On a side note, i see alot of women, saying "baby will come when its ready" I respectfully disagree. Babies do not always come when they're "ready" millions of babies arrive way before they are ready all over the world, so they definitely come before they are ready, and on the other hand, many babies have passed away in the womb because they were in there too long, and the womb was no longer a healthy environment for them to live in, simply because the woman's body never went into labor on its own...this generally is uncommon, but it does happen. I know several women who's baby's never came on their own, so in other words the statement, "baby will come when its ready" is not accurate....I don't mean to be offensive, but its the truth, some babies need help, some don't. Its not so much if the baby is ready or not, its the mother's body/hormones, that control if/when labor will start/stop/continue. Some babies are perfectly ready to come, but the mothers body needs assistance, which in many cases has/will lead to natural or medical induction. With that said, you really should talk to your doctor before you attempt any natural/medical methods of induction to be on the safe side.

As you said you've already done your research, so good job there, I really hope you go into labor hun, and if you have any other questions or anything about my castor oil experience, feel free to PM me...:)

This comment sorta made me feel better having a scheduled c-section because I kept feeling like if they come when their ready then I'm kind of ripping him out when he's not ready. I know he won't be over due or under due when he comes but It's nice to feel that he won't miss anything he really needs by being scheduled.

my midwife took it when she was 38 weeks pregnant and she said it worked like a charm to bring on her labor... sorry, i don't have a personal experience, but that's what she told us in our birthing class.

I contemplated this when I was pregnant but am glad I didnt. If you are even considering taking this again speak to your MW first.

Most MW's do not recommend this nowadays :flower:

My sister took castor oil with all three of her babies and worked everytime with no ill effects.

She has mentioned to me to take it but i wont....just thought id share the experience.

I dont think it was fair to jump down the OP's throat a few have been quite rude to her. Shes only going by what she thought was best.

I find it funny that on many threads on the subject, many have the opinion that drinking alcohol while pregnant is down to personal choice, yet OP is getting grief for taking castor oil

I know which of the two id deem more safe to put into my body

Any who...

I did it with 2 out of 3 of my pregnancies and it worked like a charm and honestly I would do it again, As long as you're full term and healthy I say go for it, I drank the whole 4oz bottle as it was recommended to me that way, I also used evening primrose oil for about a week leading up to my home inductions as well as several times the day of. Many midwives swear by this and as far as it being dangerous, maybe it is,maybe it isn't, but I believe in alternative medicine and herbal care and alot of times its far better and safer than doctors will do for you, Good luck and just be smart, if it doesnt work, I wouldn't do it again just to be safe

until someone has been put on mag sulfate by their dr. like i have and almost died just to stay pregnant (happened to me this past weeknend) I dont want people to judge safe or unsafe and now im on heart medicine that happens to keep labor from starting which makes me super sick, pretty safe the safety of this is questionable, anyway dont listen to the rude comments, I didnt realize there were so many, sheesh.....:dohh:

My step sister tried castor oil when she was 37weeks within a few hours she went into labour the only problem was that her body wasn't ready for labour so she ended up being in slow labour 2days short of 3weeks!! I have thought about trying it but I know I couldn't stomach it and I'm really enjoying the last few weeks being pregnant

My cousin is 7 days overdue today, she went to the shops or Castol Oil yesterday and not one pharmacy in our area sells it!!!!

wow! i wasnt looking for all these negative comments but you have a right to your own opinion but i wasnt asking if you thought it was a good idea since i have already taken it Obviously. If i thought it would harm my baby i wouldnt have taken it and i HAVE dont lots of research on it. Dr and midwives give it to people to this day and its over the counter...not like its poison or anything. Im not looking to fight just wanted to know peoples experiences!!

For those who gave me their experiences thank you!! thats all i wanted.

It gave me Diarrhea and thats all nothing else no contractions....yet.

It worked for me with both my older children. I spoke to my midwife about it the other day and she said it is safe, its just it can make the mother poorly and not to believe everything you read on the net. She said its untrue about the meconium too. She is a professional and I trust her judgement. If you were to have a real spicy curry and it gave you bad cramps then surely the baby can become distressed from eating a curry then and you could become dehydrated. Castor oil does not have the same effect on the baby as it does the mum. Each to their own.

im very interested in this although i would never use it myself i dont think.. unless it was recommended to me..
