Hi Ladies. I suffer from an incompetant cervix. I'm going to see a specialist next week and I was wondering if anyone else has had a cerclage?
how far along were you?
Was it a scheduled one or an emergency?
Do you remember how long your cervix was when you had it done?
Were you awake? epidural? or did you sleep through it?
How was recovery?
Were you on bedrest?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

I'm being monitored in this pregnancy due to a suspected incompetent cervix. I lost my son last year at 22 weeks as I presented at hospital with funnelling cervix and bulging membranes. For this reason they couldn't put in a cerclage.

I'm being scanned fortnightly to keep an eye on my cervix length. As soon as there are signs of shortening they will insert the cerclage.

It's only suspected at this stage as I've had a previous term plus pregnancy.

I was told that an elective cerclage is usually done between 12-14 weeks. An emergency one is done when the cervix shortens below 2.5cm. An incompetent cervix is only a risk between 14-24 weeks when the cervix can be have a lot pressure put on it as baby puts on weight. After that the baby is too big and the weight evenly distributed; the baby can't just 'fall' out.

There is an ongoing thread on gestational complications board; where some of the ladies are very knowledgable.

Thank you so much for the feedback. I'll check out the site you mentioned.. I'm really surprised that they didn't give u a cerclage already this time around. I too lost my son at 22 weeks...

It's purely because they can't say for certain I have an incompetent cervix as my first pregnancy went on to 41+3 weeks and even then I had to be induced. So it's unusual to have a weak cervix following that.

I'm being reassured by the additional scans and I'm having to use progestrone suppositories also which'll help maintain the cervix and pregnancy.

Gotcha. I didn't realize you had gone full term( and beyond) before. I checked out the gestational page. I didn't even realize there was one on here. It was super informative.. Thx again
