Hey Laura

I decided on adding to my monthly analysis this month along with CM checking and OPKs. Thought cervix checking would be easy, but I am confused! TMI - but I can't find it and its stressing me out! I must have small hands or a hide and seek cervix! haha I had a couple of goes last month and its the same this month, I can feel something but not like whats described on here and the internet. maybe have a go, and see what you think, but I am struggling ....any advice from others would be very grateful

Hi! I'm TTC #1 now. Good times, but oh so stressful at times! Checking your cervix is part of the whole puzzle. It can take a bit of practice to figure out what you're feeling for and then figuring out what it all means.

I'll try to help, though it's kind of hard to explain. So first, you should choose a position and use the same position every time you check. I check while sitting on the toilet. You can put your leg up on the side of the shower too.

Make sure to wash your hands BEFORE you check. You definitely don't want any bacteria up there. Then, insert your pointer or middle finger. You should insert it all the way and direct it kind of upwards. The inside of your vagina is soft and kind of bumpy. The cervix (when you're not close to ovulating) feels like a hard bump. Some people say it feels like the tip of your nose. There is an opening in it kind of like a dimple. Sometimes, when I feel it I have to move underneath what I feel to feel the dimple.

When you're not fertile the cervix is firm or hard (feels like the tip of your nose), low in your vagina and the dimple feels "closed." As ovulation approaches, the cervix softens, moves up (harder to feel) and the dimple "opens."

It really takes practice. You can check everyday and start recording what you feel. Once you get better at it, this will help you tell when you are getting closer to ovulating.

Oh, and the cervix can change during the day. It is best to check around the same time everyday.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanks so much BeeStrong for your reply....

I am still struggling though. TMI - i use my middle finger and have tried one leg up, squatting, and laying down each time!! (and my bathroom is small!! :haha:) but can only feel what feels like the tip of my little finger, no softeness or 'opening' ??? No idea if its high or low because it feels the same distance all the time (hard to reach???) i have tried last month prior to AF and this month every other day and it feels the same all the time???

dust to all :dust: xxxxx

ebaz- I completely understand. I'll try to explain it better, here goes:

I'm a nurse, so none of this is TMI for me...

Sit on the toilet and spread your legs wide open. When you insert your finger your palm should be up towards the ceiling. I'm going to refer to putting pressure inside your vagina with the nail side of your finger and the "pad" or fleshy side of your finger.

As you insert your finger press the pad of your middle finger firmly against the upper part of your vaginal canal (up towards your head). You'll hit a point where you can't advance any further. You should have bumped the side of your cervix. Stay right there with your finger.

Now, change the pressure to the nail side of your finger and press firmly against the lower floor of the vagina (down towards your feet). Try to advance further, you should be able to. You are now moving past the opening of the cervix and towards the back of the vaginal canal. This should help you figure out where your cervix is. As you are advancing back, applying pressure with the nail side of your finger, you should slide over the dimple part of the cervix with the pad of your finger.

Let me know if this helps at all!

Wow! I could never feel the "opening" to my cervix before, but you explained this PERFECTLY. Thanks so much! I light bulb just went off in my head. Haha. :)
