I've seen so many ladies freaking out about Cheese, deli meat, bathing, etc. These things are OKAY!! In moderation, don't be gluttonous about it of course! Be cautious but don't freak out! Stress doesn't help the baby!!:baby:

If the meat doesn't look right/smell right - don't eat it! Don't go eat lunch meat all day everyday!!

Bathing. Bathe all you want! Use comfortable tempature. Not scolding hot!

i was basically told to stay away from ANYTHING unpasturised and all nuts incase the baby has allergies. besides that i'm eating what i like!! :D

I can barley stand to read this post my MS nausea is kicking in lol Thank you though very informational!

I mean, you wouldn't do anything UNpasterized when you're not pregnant right? (for the most part).

Eat like you normally would before you got pregnant with FEW exceptions.
Everything needs to be in moderation!!

Raw seafood - I prefer most of mine cooked anyway. (sushi=love=withdrawls)
Seafood overall - watch what kind of fish it is, cook it throughly just like you would when you aren't pregnant, no seafood everyday, maybe 2-3 times a week with good portions!
peanuts? -I haven't heard that one, i've eaten all sorts of nuts all three pregnancies, so far so good.

don't believe everything you read. just trust your gut. I know we try so hard for the babies and we want to be cautious, which is great! However, if you start freaking out and stressing about every little thing you put in your mouth, you might as well be hooked up to a liquid saline drip!!

Just relax! Enjoy the food! Just know if it looks/tastes/smells funny, it's probably not good anyway!

I stay away from deli meat because who knows how long the meat had been opened before it was sliced/packaged and it's high in salt- bloated enough as is. If you want to eat it, you're supposed to cook it till it steams to kill any possible lysteria which is the reason you're cautioned away from it during pregnancy.
Thanks for the post! Too many things to worry about being pregnant...

Everything i cant eat while pregnant dosnt bother me one bit... Except sushi.. i miss sushi sooooo much. Fiance and i used to do sushi night once a week, now i can only look at pictures.. like its sushi porn!

ME TOO! SUSHI!!! OMGGG> I had a cali roll, which is imatation crab, avacdo roll with cucumber sticks. As long as we have that for the next 9 months we'll be fine. don't eat 20 peices either! HAHAHA

As far as the Listeria is concerned: It's very unlikely you will get the infection. There are FDA companies who examine this meat for a reason, who package it properly, shelf life is montiored (usually, lol) and taken down when expired. If you are so worried about lunch meat/deli meat, why eat it when you're not pregnant? you can easily get an "infection" with listeria when your not pregnant. Listeria is highly unlikely people!

It would only be in ready to eat meat. So go buy a turkey or ham or roastbeef cook it to tempature and use THAT MEAT for sandwiches. Then you know it doesn't have listeria because it's A. Not ready to eat, sitting on a shelf/counter for X time. B. you know YOU cooked it to PROPER temp!

you should know the lesser expensive brands aren't the greatest meat choices anyway! Or canned meat (gaggg).

I know you mean well, but please think before you post.

Eating deli meat has nothing to do with whether the meat smells good or not - Listeria can live on meat that smells fine. A woman who is NOT pregnant and eats deli meat with listeria on it will more than likely be fine. A pregnant women will not.

Anything un pasturized is not safe to eat.

Raw seafood is most certainly not okay to eat.

Again, I don't want to start a war here, but you know very well you can't believe what you read on the internet and I don't want women on here believing they can eat whatever they want.

Two doctors whose care I am under right now have told me to absolutely stay away from raw seafood (I am a Sushi lover) and unless I heat deli meat first, stay away from that too.

A. I never condoned raw seafood OR unpasturized food. Sushi depending on what you get, is okay. California Rolls - imitation crab, avacado, cucumber sticks. You can also get your SUSHI cooked aka "tempra fried" as they call it.
B. Everyone's docs say different things.
C. I def agree with heating of prepacked meat. I don't heat my lunchmeat up at home (If i am out at a resturaunt I do), HOWEVER I don't eat lunch meat everyday either. If people are so freaked out by it why not (like i said before) buy a whole turkey, ham, what have you - cook it to tempature liek you would at Thanksgiving. and slice THAT up for sandwiches!!

Cheese is okay, but deli meat that is not heated is not. It can contain Listeria which can cause a miscarriage. I am not taking that risk with my baby. I've read that Listeria grows at refridgerated temperatures, so even if they test for it, it can still grow afterwards. I do eat it, but I have it heated it. I prefer it cold, but I'll take it heated to help kill the bacteria for now.

You can eat nuts hun, 100% (i work in food training industry). The medical profession used to recommend that you avoid nuts due to allergies whilst ongoing research concluded. Conclusion? Nuts/peanuts are fine. I would not have got thru the past few weeks without peanut butter LOL!!

Of course, everyone needs to do what makes tyhem feel safe - so if not eating nuts feels better, stick with it :hugs:

I dont think the original poster meant any harm and ladies do their own research as to what they can / cant eat anyway. Im not eating deli meats but if its in food without me knowing then i am not going to freak out afterwards. I wont freak out because i have vast knowledge of food bacteria and food related illnesses due to my job, but others who dont know alot about food micro organisms may freak out having only heard ''DONT, DANGEROUS, LISTERIA, MISCARRIAGE' etc - so posts like this one even it out.

so I AM NOT SAYING ''go ahead and eat cold deli meat'' at ALL. what i am saying is avoid it unless hot, but if you eat in something when out DO NOT FREAK OUT.

I bought some "natural" deli meat. The only ingrediants in it are: ham, water, sea salt, and natural celery juice. No artificial preservatives and its been minimally processed. Now I dont eat a ton of it everyday but a slice here or there is fine I think and I heat it up too. But I think even if you didnt it would be ok??

I am sooo missing my sushi.. I actually had sushi during my TWW with my friend. Obviously I didnt know I was pregnant, but it was soooo good. Thank god I can still have a cali roll every once in a while!!

In regards to food, just do what you think you need to do to keep baby as safe as possible while you stay as sane as possible.
Lysteria is rare but I personally avoid places like subway now (don't like deli meat hot). I would feel horrible if I ate something I knew could potentially endanger my baby. I cook all my meat fresh and then slice it so no harm done.
Glad you posted about cream cheese being ok, I was going to look it up because I love cream cheese on apple cinnamon rice cakes.

CALI ROLLS FOR THE NEXT EIGHT MONTHS! heehee

And I really didn't mean any harm on this post, just letting ladies know not to freak out at every little detail. That it is okay to eat certain things. Again, to each their own and do your own research. It wasn't my intention to persuade anyone's opinions, just putting mine out there. :hugs: if I offended anyone!

Because the immune system in normal, healthy people is able to take care of the Listeria bacteria with little problem. Unfortunately, listeria can cross the placenta to the fetus, and can cause big problems IF left untreated - so 'you ate it before you were pregnant' is a poor argument.

It is a small risk for sure. In fact, eating unwashed vegetables is ALSO a risk for listeria.

And, about the cheese, your list there may not be accurate either. There is lots of evidence to show that ANY cheese is fine, as long as it is made with pasturized milk - including blue-veined cheese.

LOTS of people on here have done their own research and spoken with their Dr's about what is and what is not safe to eat - and plenty of people on here also probably have strong scientific backgrounds themselves. Obiviously, you have strong opinions about what is appropriate to eat for you, and that is great. But, there is really no 'truth' about what to eat in pregnancy, or every Dr., every website, and every medical association for every developed country would have exactly the same guidelines....but that certainly is not the case.

Gosh - the OP was only posting what she has been told / heard for our information. From that information we are all grown ups and can do our own research.

She meant no harm.

I agree, I do. If you read my earlier posts, it wasn't my intention of trying to be a smart ass or persue people to my opinion. Opinions are just that. Your doc could say something completely different than my doc. Again if you read the earlier statement I posted, you'd know it wasn't meant to upset anyone. I never disagreed on the pasturized cheese thing. I wouldn't eat that even if i wasn't pregnant. ewww!

I saw no harm in this post. All new mommys to be are extra paranoid right now it's kinda nice to be reminded to relax
