Hello Ladies,

My 13 month old son has got the chicken pox, he's a happy little boy during most of the day, pretty much unaffected, but during the night he's really struggling. I've given him calpol (or similar) in the night when he's really struggling, and tonight after bath I smothered him in calomine lotion.

Fortunately we think our 2 1/2 year old daughter's already had it when she was little, very mildly, so she shouldn't catch it :/

Anyone got any tips for me to stay sane during this time? Or anything else I can do to help him? :coffee:

lots of salt in the bath water dries the blisters up faster! and watch out for scratchy labels, waistbands or seams in clothes. sorry not a lot of advice really.

Piriton will help the itching (think it's 12 months plus they can have it) get calamine cream not lotion (lasts linger anddoesntdry out and itch more) and dead sea magic bath salts

HTH - the boys had it last month xxx

Piriton is great and helped loads for my LO with itching (can take 24+ hours to start working, my doctor said it works on a build up effect so make sure you give it morning and night without fail), the first 2-3 days are the worst. Cool baths and just wash with water not soaps which can irritate the spots. Loose clothing and don't let him get too hot, getting hot and sweaty will make itching worse. And just keep at the front of your mind that at least he's getting it now and it will be over and done with whilst he's young!

:)

We used Poxclin (Boots sell it) when Madeline had it a couple of weeks ago. It's like a foam so dead easy to put on and seemed to work a treat. Chickenpox didn't bother her at all and she didn't scratch them either - I think this helped with that.

It's about a tenner though and if they are mostly scabbed over then I wouldn't bother getting it as we didn't really use it much after that!

Thanks for all your advice ladies!

We had a very difficult night last night, 3 failed hours of trying to settle him between 7.30 and midnight, and he ended up in bed with us crying and scratching half the night :coffee: There seem to be LOADS on his scalp, I'm not sure how to treat those??? :help:

I'm going to go out today and see which of these suggestions I can find.

Calamine cream works on the scalp - looks awful and takes days to wash out but it works!

Thank you!! Unfortunately no luck on getting any treatments so far. OH went into a supermarket and asked but it sounds like the chemist was very rude and stated there was no other thing for chicken pox than callomine lotion. :dohh:

I'm going to have to go to boots or somewhere another day.. :coffee:
