I received a letter today from HMRC telling me that I was overpaid (and need to pay back) £597 due to a delay in me telling them about a change in my circumstances but I'm sure they must be wrong. I can't speak to anyone about it until monday so I'm hoping to get some reassurance or advice from anyone who's been through something similar.
Here's the full story:
I had my son Sept 8th 2013 and was living with his father at the time so we made a joint claim for Child Tax Credits.
We split up on Dec 2nd 2013 and my son and I moved out immediately.
Due to all the fuss of moving house, looking after a newborn and changing all the other information that needed to be changed I completely forgot to notify HMRC that I needed my claim to be updated until a few months later.
However, I just used their online tax credits calculator and found out that I am entitled to the exact same amount with my single claim as I was entitled to when I was on a joint claim with my ex.
If I had told them about the change sooner I wouldn't have received any less money so it doesn't make sense to me how they can say that I was overpaid.
I can't afford to pay the money in 30 days and to be honest, I don't exactly see why I should.
If I appeal do you think they'll understand what I'm saying?
Has anyone else been though anything like this with hmrc before?
