I'm not totally sure if I'm even supposed to be on this site since I'm a guy but I'll give it a shot.

When my wife and I got married 5.5 years ago (she was 20 and I was 19) we utilized the pill for about a year but it made my wife sick so she stopped taking it. I guess by default were ntnp at that point. This went on for close to 3 years before my wife decided she wasn't ready and went back on a different pill.

Last week she went off the pill and this time we are actually trying.

My concern is that over almost 3 years there was no pregnancy. During that time I was working a lot so we probably only had sex once a week, she has always been irregular sometimes skipping a month, and I was under a lot of stress.

So I guess my question is: should we see a specialist right away or should we just go for it? I'm a bit terrified that it may just not work out for us.

Has your wife tried temping and charting her ovulation? she can join fertilityfriend, its completely free and will teach her how to do it. She can also use OPKs (ovulation kits) to help predict the day she is ovulating, so you two can BD at the correct times of the month. Im not sure that a specialist will do anything at the moment until you guys have tried for at least a year and havnt conceived. Im not sure if they would consider the BDing once a week when you were NTNP as trying but I'm not an expert and don't really know for sure. hope that helps a little :)

Thanks so much! Awesome info. I will be looking into those kits!

no problem :) if you have more questions feel free to ask!

I wouldnt say its necessary to go straight to a fertility specialist, but talking to her obgyn right away would be a good start. We did ntnp for a while tben ttc on our own with temping and then after all that found out i wasnt ovulating due to pcos. Got pregnant after 2 fertility treatments :) Good luck with everything!

I wouldn't necessarily go to ovulation prediction kits etc right away. I would give yourselves 3-6 months taking a very relaxed approach - it can take some time for ovulation and periods to go back to 'normal' after being on the pill. Do make sure your OH writes down when she has her period so she can try to see what her cycle length may be. It will help if she reads up on natural signs of ovulation so she can determine when she is most likely to be fertile. Generally if you know your 5 day 'window' for ovulation and do the deed every other day, you stand a good shot at getting pregnant!

Good luck.

PS- I don't have anything against OPKs or any other devices to help people, but I do think that sometimes they put people under more pressure to conceive quickly which can (for some reason) make things harder.

Thanks! All good responses and I really appreciate it. At the moment we're taking a very relaxed approach and just having fun with it. I'll definitely have more questions I'm sure. It's funny, I am a paramedic so you'd think I'd have more of a clue! This stuff is WAY more new to me than I expected!

It Iis probablya good idea for her to go to the doctor. Tell her to start taking prenatal vitamins even if she is not pregnant.
