confused about periods stop/starting

hi ladies,
i am a little confused as to ovulation etc.
i have fairly regular periods but one month they are really heavy then the next month not heavy, the i will stop for a few days then bleed again, then stop then bleed again , then it might happen again.
i had an operation in 2009 to remove a polup in my womb but was told that i am fine after that.
so my question is, what is wrong with me, should this happen and am i even ovulating?
have just decided to try for another child as i have a 5 year old already, i am about to turn 38 next month , could this be the menopause already?
anyone else had this problem and what was the answer please.

I would definitely ask a doctor about it. I don't believe it has anything to do with menopause but you should have things looked at to make sure there aren't any problems.
